Okay, I will tell you that I am not a fan of the writings of the author who whose birthday is today, but I realize and acknowledge his importance. On this date in 1871, Stephen Crane was born. He was the eighth surviving child of an American Methodist family who began writing at the age of four and was published by the age of 16. He was an American realist, and
The Red Badge of Courage (1895) was his best known work. Impressionists like Claude Monet were a major influence on him. As a side note, he had an affair with a married woman, Lily Brandon Monroe, who was separated from her husband but who refused to run away with him. He died on June 5, 1900, at the young age of 28. He was survived by his domestic partner, Cora Taylor, the owner of a Florida brothel. She inherited everything upon his death.
