Jerome Charyn (born May 13, 1937) is an award-winning American author. With nearly 50 published works, Charyn has earned a long-standing reputation as an inventive and prolific chronicler of real and imagined American life. Michael Chabon calls him “one of the most important writers in American literature.”

New York Newsday hailed Charyn as “a contemporary American Balzac,” and the Los Angeles Times described him as “absolutely unique among American writers.”

Since 1964, he has published 30 novels, three memoirs, eight graphic novels, two books about film, short stories, plays and works of non-fiction. Two of his memoirs were named New York Times Book of the Year. Charyn has been a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. He received the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and has been named Commander of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture.

Charyn lives in Paris and New York City.

Back to Bataan by Jerome Charyn

I will say something about this book that I often don't say about books--especially books that are this short.  This book honestly could not have been improved upon!  I absolutely loved it!  From the first page to the last, it was exactly what a "tween"/young adult historical fiction book should be.  The characters were well-developed, and the story was believable.  The characters had their flaws, and it made them seem that much more realistic.  There were no sex scenes (yay!) and no profanity (yay!).  Can you believe it?  Rarely do I find a book that is this well-written that does not include those less desirable features.

World War II is one of those periods of time that always fascinates me, but from a teacher's standpoint, students could care less.  They have heard about the Germans, and they have heard about the Japanese.  They know about the Holocaust, and they know about the bombs.  Who cares if people were killed?  Jerome Charyn has done something so that students will connect with ths time period.  He tells the story of the time period from the perspective of a boy (I love the fact that the main character is a boy--a good way to get boys reading since they often do not want to).  The book is short, and it is a quick read.  The boy, Jack, gets into mischief--pretty serious mischief at times.  The danger is real, but it is not too scary even for the younger readers.  My daughter, who is nine, would be able to read this book with no problem.  I think she would even be able to understand it.

So what more can I say?  Read this book!  It is worth the read, and I honestlly don't think there is any way you will regret the time spent.  It will enrich your understanding of WWII, and then you will want to share it with everyone you know!

OF TIME AND PLACE by B.R. Freemont

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First of all, this is a long book, but it is not a hard read.  Don't let the length of the book deter you from reading it.  You just might pass up a gem of a story.  I honestly did not even find that reading the book was a chore even though it did not capture my attention as much as other books.  And my inability to fully connect with the story and the characters is not the fault of the author.  You know how it is--some stories just aren't one's forte.

This book did cause me a bit of confusion at first.  It is written in the future, but it also jumps back and forth between dates.  The saving grace is that each chapter has a date and location that starts it off.  This was pure genius on the part of the author.  If you get lost, at least you know you have a "safety net."

I did appreciate the view that the author took on energy conservation and the issues that may be faced in the future.  I sometimes felt that the book was a little "soft" when it came to the future.  Sometimes it felt that things were too similar to today, and the fact that freedom of religion is still promised in the future seemed rather strange.  I guess because I feel that things will be worse than what the book portrayed.  But I could be very wrong.

The author's writing style was good enough.  There were many references to sex and some mild scenes.  There was some profanity, but it was not rampant.  I could have done without either.  I only wished I could have cared more about the characters in the story.  And I felt that the last few chapters were quite rushed and covered way too many years.  Again, just a personal preference.

One message the book does teach is that life is precious, and it should not be taken lightly.  Also, in one moment, your entire life can change.  All good things to remember.  It is a good idea to live today as if it may be your last (because it may be).  If you are looking for a futuristic book without violence, this may be the book for you.

Until high school, though I was an avid reader, writing wasn't even a thought in my head. In my teens, I only wrote papers for English classes and, though teachers weren't particularly impressed, I liked the feeling writing gave me.

In my twenties, my writing was in my personal journals. They were very difficult times - but also contributed to some of the most profound turning points of my life. My father's alcoholism progressed, an abusive brother became more mentally and emotionally abusive, and my sister was already showing signs that her "moodiness" (as my mother called it) was the beginnings of mental illness. I also fell in love and was engaged, only to realize the relationship wasn't going to work out in the long term; I ended the engagement but at the expense of my father's approval. When I moved into my own apartment, my parents (with their strong first-generation Italian values) didn't approve. Not only did they not help in any way, my father didn't talk to me for almost a year. I was teaching in a Catholic elementary school and making next to nothing - or, as I often joke, earning a couple holy cards a week. Writing was a way of sorting out my thoughts and feelings.

In my thirties I began writing articles for magazines. At first I wrote for esoteric publications and then, after starting my consulting business, I wrote business-related articles for a variety of publications. I started a publishing group within a professional association and became more and more inspired to write and submit my work to magazines. I was really, really proud of my first check for a freelance article! I was having the kind of positive feedback and recognition that gave me the confidence to write a book about my unusual marriage contract. Unfortunately, at that time, I couldn't find a publisher who would consider it. So, in 1998, I boxed the manuscript up and put it away.

Then, almost fifteen years ago, still lacking an undergraduate degree, I made the decision to go back to college. It was a curriculum designed for people like me who were way past “traditional” college age. It began with a required first course for research science. Each week I turned in the required paper on some topic I researched. While my grades were in the B+/A category, I somehow presumed that I was just keeping up with the rest of the class. After all, we weren't kids just starting out. But a conversation with the instructor turned things around. She told me that I was one of two students in her class whose writing was head and shoulders above the rest of the class. She also told me that I had a talent and should do something with it.

I graduated, magna cum laude, in 2001. The teacher, Gloria Williams, retired a few years later. We still keep in touch and have a breakfast together from time to time. If I hadn't returned to finish my college degree, I might never have never written a book that could actually get published. Who'da thunk it? Sometimes, as one of my mentors tells me frequently, it’s all about showing up!

Because I offer workshops, teleseminars, etc. around the subject matter of my first book, Victorious Woman!, I developed the Victorious Woman! Workbook, Victory by Design. At this time it’s being redesigned to accommodate an e-book format that will include links, podcasts, etc.

That book that I put in storage in 1998 came out the box last year and is in the process of being finished – finally! What I’ve noticed is that the market for my “different twist” on marriage is broader now. The Five Year Marriage is generating more interest and I think it will be better accepted by the public in 2013 than it would have been in 1998. To everything there is a season, eh?!

I can make my crazy when I write, wanting everything to say exactly what I mean and often finding that I'm not satisfied with it. I must have rewritten the first chapter of Victorious Woman! over fifty times before it went to the editor, who also had me rewriting it again...and again.

Still, if I'm not up against a deadline, there is something about writing that relaxes me. It's the time I can be alone with my own thoughts, think about what I want to say and express my feelings in a way that I might be able to do when speaking.

The Color of Snow by Brenda Stanley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is one of the most amazing young adult books I have read in a while.  The story was expertly crafted, and the message came across in a very real way.  I was drawn in from the first page through the very last sentence.

I connected with this book in a real way since I was married to a possibly schizophrenic man at one time in my life.  He also came from a family where mental illness was a problem.  Unfortunately, he did not control it through medication like he should have, and my marriage had to be dissolved to protect my daughter and me from living a controlled possibly violent life.  The end of the book, when Sophie began to face the truth about her past, resonated with me, and I understood, to a degree, what she was feeling.  Even using the Bible and God to justify her father's treatment of her was something that sounded familiar.

The way in which Brenda Stanley wrote the book was truly amazing.  The beginning of the book reminded the reader of similar stories in the news, and I felt that I had to keep reading so I could put all the pieces together. The author jumped back and forth between various years in the character's lives, and so the reader is often left hanging and wondering why something happened or what was going on.  But in the end, all the questions were answered--I was certainly glad of that!

I appreciated the fact that there were no bedroom scenes, and the profanity was extremely minimal.  Real issues such as racial prejudice, religious intolerance, pedophilia, and murder were dealt with on a real level.  Even the discussion of whether "curses" were real or not was explored.  And the message of not having to follow established family patterns and breaking cycles was dealt with in an understandable fashion.

I can't recommend this book enough to everyone.  I have never read anything by Brenda Stanley, but she has quickly become one of my favorite young adult books.  The book was a very readable book, and its message will resonate with a good share of readers.

Her writing has been recognized by the Scripps Howard Foundation, the Hearst Journalism Awards, the Idaho Press Club and the Society for Professional Journalists. Tribute Books began in 2004 and we've published over 30 titles since that time. The under $5 price point of most of our e-titles and the ease of purchase and delivery surely facilitated this rapid change.
Overall, our transition is based on three factors. On a business level, the young adult genre sells especially if it is well written and has a paranormal romance theme. On a marketing level, the devotion of the young adult fan base is unparalleled. On a personal level, I thoroughly enjoy a good young adult novel and review many on my blog at http://tributebooksreviews.blogspot.com. I'm a believer in doing what you love and working with like-minded people, when it's at all possible.

Interested authors can submit their manuscripts via email to info@tribute-books.com. There will be no charge for the authors we select to work with, and they will receive 50% of the net profits of their ebook sales in quarterly royalty payments. We're looking for Microsoft Word documents with a maximum of 350 pages of text with no photos, charts, illustrations, graphs, etc. Manuscripts that have already been professionally edited will receive greater consideration. Our preference is to work with authors who have already been published through a royalty-paying press and who know the ins and outs of book promotion. An established social media platform is a must, and we will not consider writers who do not have a well-followed blog, Facebook page or Twitter account.

Our preference is for really good writing, the particular topic is secondary in importance. I am a big believer in the power of social media. I even conduct monthly blog tours for outside publishers and authors in order to help them increase the online presence of a book. Book bloggers are a powerful force in the book industry. With more and more book stores closing and book review columns being cut from major newspapers, readers are depending on bloggers to help them find the books they want to read. They are turning to the internet as a reference point to fill this information gap.

In my opinion, social networking is the bread and butter of any author's promotional efforts. Without it, it's like trying to paddle upstream without a canoe. Readers want to connect with the person who wrote the book. They crave interaction with an author. Nothing beats getting a writer to comment on a blogger's book review post or getting a personalized thank you tweet from your favorite author. The days of authors being isolated from their fans is over. They're now able to build an online following and receive instant feedback for their work. They have the opportunity to take part in creating their own literary community.
