This Day in History July 26, 1940

Merrie Melodies - A Wild Hare (1940) by Cartoonzof2006

I really did know that on this date  in 1940 that Bugs Bunny was "born."  By born, I mean, it was the first official appearance of an unnamed rabbit that later became Bugs Bunny.  The name of this short is A Wild Hare (a play on words--hare/hair).

In this cartoon, Elmer Fudd was in his "refined" form including his signature voice.  Bugs Bunny was further refined over the next few years, but his signature line "What's Up Doc?" was first featured in this short.  It was a play on Clark Gable's character in It Happened One Night where his character was biting off a carrot faster than he could chew it.  The audience would have recognized this similarity.

Just for the record, Mel Blanc (who later did all the voices for Looney Toons cartoons as well as Barney in The Flinstones) did all the voices in this short although he was not credited.
