"Unexpecting" by Lori Verni-Fogarsi Blog Tour, Interview, and Giveaway (Ends 5/15) WW

Shelley and David are a couple of almost-empty-nesters whose children are just about all off to college. Preparing to embark on the next stage of their life, they’ve just ordered white furniture and are planning the vacation they’ve waited their entire lives to take.
Everything changes when Alexandra, seventeen and pregnant, shows up on their doorstep and announces that she’s the daughter he never knew he had! Their life is catapulted in a completely different direction, abounding with dilemmas: Not only do they have an additional child, but also a baby in a household that had been just about to become serene. How much should they help her? And how could they not?

Shelley feels like she no longer fits in anywhere and to top it off, having two seventeen-year-old girls suddenly plunged into being sisters and school mates is not exactly warm and fuzzy. When Alexandra’s behavior starts to become erratic, the couple is faced with even tougher decisions to make.

Hold on for an emotional yet witty ride as you join this family of characters in a story of love, loyalty, heartbreak, and humor that will stay with you long after you turn the last page!

Read the first chapter here.

As you might expect, I am still behind and do not have the book reviewed yet, but I will.  I am working on it.  The reason today?  Well, we have no water.  Our well pump is not working, so you can imagine the fun we are having as we wait for that to get fixed.  And with everything happening around here, I still have the tendency to get behind.  One of these days, I might get caught up.

Lori Verni-Fogarsi has been an author, speaker, and small business consultant since 1995. Her nonfiction book, “Everything You Need to Know About House Training Puppies and Adult Dogs,” was published in 2005 and continues to be one of the most highly recommended books in its genre. Her novel, “Momnesia,”was published in 2012 and has been awarded as a finalist in both the National Indie Excellence Book Awards and The USA Best Book Awards.
Just a few of her media appearances have included The Lifetime Women’s Network,My Carolina Today Show, Boston Globe Forums Live, and a multitude of others. Her seminars have taken place at public and private venues for many years, just a few of which include North Carolina State University and Nassau Community College.
Lori is a happily married mom of two, step mom of two more, and has two cats, both rotten. Originally a native New Yorker, she now divides her time between Raleigh, NC, and Lake Gaston, VA, where she is hard at work on her next novel.

I do have an interview of the author to share.  Check it out!
1.  Describe a typical day in your life.  Be as detailed as you like.
Fix yourself a coffee... you're going to be tired just hearing about it! My typical day begins at 5:50 am, at which point I begin the process of getting three kids off to school. By 7:30 I can already be found at my desk, where I tend to stay for the majority of the day, working on writing my books, marketing, social media, and projects for my small business consulting clients (building websites, designing marketing materials, and building social media presence.) Usually by around 2:30 I start feeling like I'm going blind, so I (hate to admit it takes this long...) shower and do my hair and makeup in preparation for the busy evening ahead. One of my daughters is 15 and very involved in dance, while another is in gymnastics and my stepson contributes to the busy-ness too. My evenings are often spent working on my laptop in the library that's nearby my daughter's dancing school while I wait for her! Generally, in the evenings after nine, I ban myself from the office so my husband and I can have a little time together each night!

2.  What do you see as your greatest strength as a writer?  Your greatest weakness?
My greatest strengths are my "voice," meaning the conversational tone that's found in my writing, as well as my willingness to "put myself out there," and talk about things people sometimes don't talk about. As for weaknesses, I tend to go through phases (much to my editor's chagrin)! There was the too many parentheses phase (see what I mean?), and there was my "multitude" phase (can we use some other words? Maybe plethora?), and most recently, there has been my "lamenting" phase, in which there was a great need for contemplating, reflecting, ruing, and other verbiage to reflect that feeling!

3.  Who have been your top supporters in your author endeavors?  How have they supported you?
Without question, my greatest supporter is my husband, Mark, who completely understands how much work I put into my books and the marketing of them, and is constantly reassuring me that while I may not make millions, it will be very nice to receive royalty checks (even if small) years from now.

My other strongest supporters have been my readers. Their kind words in an e-mail, in a review, or even on Facebook are what keeps me motivated to work as a professional author rather than just writing in a journal for my own pleasure!

4.  What has been your greatest obstacle in becoming an author?  What has been your greatest victory?
My greatest obstacle has been the publishing industry as a whole. Being an author during a time when the tides are shifting from "traditional" publishing to "independent" publishing has been a challenge because the major houses don't take on many new authors, and there are so many indie authors throwing their books out there without proper editing, it has been difficult to find a place that is the right fit. Publishing through my small press, Brickstone Publishing, has been a successful endeavor for me, though, and overall I'm happy with the way my author career is going.

As for my greatest victories, thus far I'd have to say that it's a tie between my in-person book launch party that was attended by well over one hundred guests, and the fact that my nonfiction, "Everything You Need to Know About House Training Puppies and Adult Dogs," continues to be one of the top sellers in its genre since 2005!

5.  How do you handle rejection as an author (or even the occasional negative review)?
Fortunately, I've received very few negative reviews, but of course there are some. I feel differently about them, depending on their content: If a reviewer has a genuine point they've made (for example, I've had one or two who found the language in "Momnesia" a bit offensive), I'm okay with that... everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and not every book is going to be a perfect fit for every reader. However, a review that (for example) complains that my housebreaking book doesn't teach how to litter box train a dog is simply irritating, as the description clearly states that it's about teaching dogs to make outside and in that case the person's negative review feels unfair.

6.  If you could go to dinner with three people living or dead, who would you choose and why?
What an interesting question! I would have to say that I'd love to go with my husband Mark because he's my favorite person, the recently deceased author/playwright Nora Ephron because she was so smart and hilarious, and my friend Carol Mondello who is also very wise and hilarious, and lives in New York while I live in North Carolina, so I don't get to see her nearly often enough.

7.  Tell us on of your "pet peeves" and why it bothers you so much.
This is going to make me sound so very "Type A," but it's the truth: Blatant ineptitude. There are times when I feel like I spend my whole day running in circles, repairing the errors of people around me who don't do their jobs correctly: bringing the dry cleaning back because they gave me someone else's shirt in my stuff; fighting with the bank because they deposited the wrong amount in my account, despite me having a receipt showing the correct amount... that sort of thing.

8.  Besides writing, what are some of your other hobbies/interests?
Besides being an avid reader, my favorite hobby of all time is boating. We have a second home on Lake Gaston and it is my very favorite thing to do, to just ride around and look for birds, eat peaches, and float in the water. I also enjoy attending all of my children's dance competitions, drill team, and gymnastics meets, as well as traveling with just my husband at least once or twice a year.

Thank you very much for hosting me on your blog! I hope your readers have enjoyed getting to know me through the interview, and I hope to get to know them too, either through their comments, or in other ways!

Author Interview

1. What is the hardest part of the writing process for you?  What is the easiest part?

I love all of the parts of the writing process, but finding the perfect ending tends to take longer for me. I always want it to be satisfying for a reader, and that means going through several scenarios to come up with the best wrap-up for a story. I am definitely an idea girl. I have tons of book ideas and I like to come up with titles. I have a long list of both on my laptop!!

2.  If you could meet any of the characters in your current book, who would you meet and why?

I'd love to meet Ryan Gordon, because he's such a dedicated physician and really opens up his heart and home to Grace and her family. He's learned so much from his past mistakes and is ready to find love again—he just has to convince Grace that she's the right girl for him.

3.  If you could interview any author living or dead, who would you interview and why?

I am fascinated by Sophie Kinsella. She's hilarious and witty. Her characters get into so much trouble and I love the way that she weaves story, romance, and redemption together. She's brilliant and I adore reading about London and British traditions.

4.  Do you prefer e-books or print books?  Why?

My family is pretty traditional, in that we have about 1,500 books laying around the house and on shelves. I love the feel of a book, looking at the cover, and the satisfaction of turning the final pages. I have, though, embraced technology, and am reading my first book on my iPhone. (The Fault in Our Stars by John Green—am loving it so far!)

5.  What is your favorite quote?

I have lots of favorite quotes, but these two (found on GoodReads) seem to strike a chord with my life right now:

“Tears are words that need to be written.”

"Never stop looking at the world, and never stop reading to find out what sense other people have made of it. If people give you a hard time and tell you to get your nose out of a book, tell them you're working. Tell them it's research. Tell them to pipe down and leave you alone.”

6.  Do your books tend to be autobiographical or based off real life experiences or people?  How much of your personal life experiences do you include in your books?

All of my main female characters tend to have some of my personality and quirks—whether it's being clumsy or forgetful, saying the wrong thing and not meaning it, or getting into impossible situations! I do also tend to base my younger characters on my two sons. They are such joys in my life—both innocent, earnest, and full of love. Evan was definitely drawn from my older son, Patrick.

Stardust Summer is set in a real place and I do mention real locations that have meaning to me—Garrett Chapel, Long's Book Store, Soldiers and Sailors Hospital. Like in the story, a gigantic tree fell on the roof of our cottage about ten years ago!!!

7.  What is your dream vacation spot?

Santorini, Greece - The water and landscape look amazing; I love the food and the culture.

8.  Tell us one thing about yourself that not everyone knows.

I tend to NEED to finish the library books that I check out, so sometimes I am late getting them back. I have also been known to misplace library books and find them later in odd places around the house (laundry room, kids' rooms).

I owe at least $10.00 in library fines right now and the guilt is killing me!!! (I also can't check out any more books and they aren't open on Sundays). I am actually quite happy to pay the fine—I just consider it a "donation." Hey, it's a way for the library to buy more books, right?

Blurb
Saved from a traumatic past and successful in her present as a home care nurse, Josselyn Adler’s dream of home ownership in the idyllic town of Unity are dashed to pieces when Dr Ben Parnell, a cancer specialist, shows up on her doorstep claiming to be the rightful owner of the house—and Ben has a will to prove it!  To Josselyn, the house represents a new start in her life. With a stable home, hopefully a much wanted family wouldn’t be far behind.

After a near career-ending allegation is made, Ben has returned home to lick his wounds. But now he must prove Josselyn’s claim to be a fake, that she used her position as a live-in nurse to his sick father to ingratiate herself into his good graces. But as he gets to know her, he can tell by her shy, often standoffish behavior, that Josselyn is a woman who has been deeply hurt in her past. Although he is attracted to the dark haired beauty that has invaded his life, he is still suspicious of her true motives and her past involvement with his father.

Excerpt:
When she arrived at the foot of the stairs, the front door rattled. Fear, cold and stark, rose up in her throat and choked her as she heard the lock snap and watched, rooted to the floor, the creaky old door jiggle in its frame. The anticipation mingled with fright, produced a potent, sick feeling churning inside her like the bad horror movie she’d recently viewed on late-night cable television.

After what seemed an eternity, the door flung open. The first thought entering her brain was a ghost had entered her home. A younger, blonder visage of Morgan stood in the threshold. Before she could utter his name, a second, more coherent thought followed; a ghost wouldn’t use a key.

The man in the doorway took one step inside and stopped abruptly, clenched his jaw, and stared. The familiar stranger invading her new home could only be one person.

“My goodness, you’re Ben! You’re Morgan’s son!” she exclaimed.

“Well, we know who I am. Now who the hell are you, and why are you trespassing in my house?”

“Your house?” she asked with disbelief. “This is my home. Morgan gave it to me!”

“I don’t know who you are, lady, but I suggest you get a move on it. I’ll give you five minutes before I call the police.” He pointed to his platinum-cased wristwatch for emphasis.

“Don’t bother waiting.” She reached into her handbag and removed her cell phone. With shaking fingers, she punched in 911.

The line connected after the second ring. “911, what is your emergency?” asked the female dispatcher.

“My name is Josselyn Adler. I’m the new owner of 22 Little Pine Road. A man has let himself into my home and is now threatening me.” Although she was quaking on the inside, she strove to keep her voice and demeanor strong and confident.

“I have an officer on the way, Ms. Adler. Would you like to stay on the line with me until he arrives?” she offered.

“No, thank you. I’ll be fine,” she assured her.

As she disconnected her phone, Ben’s gaze burned into her. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of showing any fear. While growing up, she had dealt with her share of tormentors. One forty-year-old, blond-haired bully was not going to intimidate her or drive her from a home that was rightfully hers.

“Very nice performance,” he said snidely.

“Excuse me?” She furrowed her brow and made eye contact. Ben Parnell had his father’s glacial, blue eyes.

“Any moment one of Unity’s finest will be arriving to play knight in shining armor and save the poor maiden from the big, bad wolf.”

Before she could utter a word in reply, a black patrol car came to a screeching halt on the street. An officer threw open the car door and made long, quick strides to the house. His uniform and Unity Police Department baseball cap matched the color of his car.

A lump formed in her throat. As she was growing up, a police car in front of the house and an officer at the door meant her father was in some sort of trouble yet again.

“Good evening, Miss. I’m Officer Smith.” He looked to Ben. “It’s certainly been a long time since you’ve been around, Ben.” Not waiting for an answer from him, he turned his attention back to Josselyn. “What seems to be the problem tonight?”

He knew Ben by his first name. They looked to be about the same age, and in this small town, it was likely they knew each other growing up. Although Officer Smith seemed friendly enough, would he side with the hometown boy rather than with the stranger girl?

“This is my house. Morgan Parnell left it to me in his will. Now he...” She paused and pointed at Ben. “He thinks it’s his house.”

“I have a will, too,” Ben loudly interrupted. “And mine is legitimate!”

His deep voice vibrated through her, causing her head to ache. Flustered, she pulled an envelope from her handbag. Morgan’s attorney gave to her a copy of the will a few days earlier. She handed it to Officer Smith. To her dismay, Ben also produced a document from a briefcase.

This is very bad.

She hoped Ben had been bluffing.

My Devotional Thoughts

1.      Do you ever experience writer's block?  And if you do, how do you overcome it?

No, I don’t experience writer’s block, I experience more of not being able to get as much writing done as I would like. Promoting takes up a huge chunk of my time, and of course, there’s life in general.

2.      Is there anything about your personality you would describe as "quirky" or unusual?  If so, would you mind telling us about it?

I think I’m quirky in general (at least that’s what people tell me!) but I can’t put it down to anything in general. I don’t like to be mainstream, I march to the beat of my own drum and respect everyone else’s right to individuality. I just ask the same in return.

3.      How do you deal with criticism as an author?

I understand that not everyone is going to like my style of writing and I accept and respect that fact. My thoughts are, If you like my stuff that’s great, if you don’t, keep walking.

4.      What has been the most successful way that you have discovered to market your books?

I’m still on the hunt all the time for great promotion and marketing. What works for one book may not necessarily work for the next and so forth. Marketing and promotion is a lot of trial and error, but it is a necessity.  I’ve come up with my own perfumes and lip balms each inspired by my stories, and everyone seems to love them.

5.      When writing a story, what is your method for coming up with the names or the characters and/or the titles of your book?

I have been blessed that I never have any trouble coming up with names or titles. It’s just something that seems to come naturally to me. It’s very rare for me to go back and change names or a title.

6.      What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in your life?  How did you deal with it?

I have lived in several countries  from the time I was very small, and found this to be very difficult at times, especially with language and cultural differences, but I learned to roll with it and accept the changes as they came. Now as an adult, I feel grateful for my experiences.

7.      How have your families and friends received your books?  Do they support you, not support you, etc.?

My family has always been very supportive of my writing and books. I am very grateful for their support.

BTS Presents "The Village of God" by Frederick E. Hosen Author Interview

A village appears where only days before there had been uninhabited rain forest.

When the village's existence comes to the attention of two Christian missionary organizations, one Protestant and the other Catholic, both send missionaries intent on convincing the villagers to attend their churches. And the battle for salvation ensues.

What are the missionaries willing to do to win the "war?" And is there something they don't know about the villagers that could scuttle their efforts?

Today I am interviewing Frederick E. Hosen, author of Village of God.  This is part of a blog tour presented by BTS.

Qs & As  Fred Hosen/The Village of God

1Q. When did you first realize that you wanted to become an author?

1A. I don’t think that there was a point in time that I thought of becoming an author.  It was more of a gradual increase in the desire to write, to create a story, and hope that something might be published.

2Q. What is your normal schedule when you are writing?

2A. There is no particular schedule that I follow when I’m writing.  It’s not that I couldn’t follow a schedule, but I’m not inclined to be that disciplined.  My approach is to work on whatever writing project I undertake in a focused but relaxed manner.

3Q. Where do you get your ideas for your stories?

3A. I get ideas from a couple of sources.  The first source would be my own experiences without being autobiographical.  Another is to utilize something that I’m interested in.  The Village of God would be an example.  In that story I used the work of dedicated missionaries, the concept of competition, and the Amazon rain forest.

4Q. When you are not writing, how do you occupy your time?

4A. I’m retired, but not from writing.  On a typical day, when not writing, I will read (books, newspapers, magazines, web sites) for four hours, exercise (walk etc.) for one hour, and watch something on TV for two to three hours.

5Q. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

5A. As a child I was so busy playing that I never thought about growing up.  Some people would argue that I still haven’t.  Perhaps the creative spark comes from a child-like mind.

6Q. What does your family think of your writing?

6A. My wife is always surprised when I complete a writing project, especially when it’s published.  She will edit my work and assist in proofreading. For the most part the rest of my family is similar to the Bible verse in the book of Matthew which reads, “A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.”

7Q. What is your advice to anyone who is thinking of becoming a writer?

7A. Persevere, but don’t give up your day job.  Also, expect and accept rejection.

8Q. Who are you favorite authors?  Why did you choose them?

8A. John Steinbeck deals clearly with the human condition.
Agatha Christie is a very concise writer – doesn’t waste words.
Frederick Forsyth moves the story along.
Hans Christian Andersen simply depicts human nature.
Charles Dickens is the master of the writing craft.
