Editorial Reviews Salisbury is a rising star in genre fiction. This book makes a unique and exciting contribution in the fantasy realm. The first of great things to come. --Jake Black, "The Authorized Ender Companion" "Smallville" "Ender's Game: Recruiting Valentine" Amazon Reviews Conclusion: A fantasy adventure that features lots of action and intrigue that is geared to a YA audience. There are moments in this tale that are especially well done... story telling at a level that I'd be interested to see what this author would do with an adult orientated fantasy work. As a dedicated YA work... 5 Stars. ~ Ray Nicholson The beginning of a great adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the Trail of Bones series. It is an unpredictable adventure, with heartwrenching acts of love and friendship. The story ended before I was prepared to put my Kindle down, and now I will wait anxiously for the second book to be published. In the meantime, I think I'll read it again with my eleven-year-old son; I'm sure he'll love it as much as I do. Give it a read! ~ HRL Enthralling story line that really pulls you in …The characters were some that I will not easily forget because he explains their background in a way that makes the reader really connect and believe they are real. He creates a world that I long to see. I really grew to both love and hate different characters. I think that is a sign of a really great author when they can make us feel so much emotion towards a character. ~ Janason

In the year 1845, before the mystical land of Fallada was separated from the realm of men forever, the two worlds coexisted in harmony. Man could mingle freely in the world of the Elves and Faeries at will and peace reigned.

In the hills of Shropshire, England, just miles from the gate separating the village of Ludlow from the world of mystical creatures, farmer’s daughter Zara Wells longs for answers. It is not only the golden hair that trail feet behind her, or the strange hue of her violet eyes that separates her from the other girls her village. There is something inside of her, something touched by magic that longs to know more about what lies on the other side of the gate.

In Fallada, darkness has begun to spread. As the youngest and most beautiful girls of her village begin to disappear, Zara comes closer to discovering the true circumstances surrounding her birth. "Jack Tamplar: Monster Hunter Academy" by Jeff Gunhus Book Review

Read more about the book and enter the giveaway here.

Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy (The Templar Chronicles #2)Jack Templar and the Monster Hunter Academy by Jeff Gunhus
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am pleased to say that this second book in the series did not disappoint.  I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series (even though I do not always like fantasy books), and I will definitely look forward to the next in the series!  This is the perfect young adult fantasy novel, and my daughter (who is almost 10) is also looking forward to reading this.  I spent some time trying to figure out why I like this fantasy series even though it deals with vampires, werewolves, and the zombies.  All I can say is that the book is clean, funny, and well-written.  For whatever reason, Jeff Gunhus can make me believe the fantasy portions of the book and even embrace them.  I guess it must be a gift he has.

I recommend this book highly to lovers of young adult fiction, fantasy fiction, and even those who just want to read something different.  I would recommend reading the first book in the series first because you might find yourself getting lost without reading the first book.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

"Helga: Out of the Hedgelands" by Rick Johnson Book Blast (ends 5/1) WW

Helga: Out of the Hedgelands Twelve-year-old Helga has more danger in her life than most beasts her age—Wrackshee slavers after her, a vicious attack by bandits that nearly kills her, a race against dragons pursuing her, and leading a daring rebellion to save her life and rescue friends and family from the insidious WooZan. And that is just the beginning. But what do you expect when you are a young beast who just can’t see the stupid rules of the world making any sense? Helga can’t accept things as they are and ends up taking on not just one, but two all-powerful, supreme tyrants in two different realms. Helga never intended to lead a revolution. It just sort of happened because she wouldn’t go along with the “rules of normal” that keep tyrants in power and entire societies enslaved. Beginning on a dangerous quest to solve some mysteries in her own past, Helga leads her quirky comrades on a journey that will not only forever change them, but upset ancient civilizations. As an author, I’m drawn to eccentric, unexpected characters: those who surprise because they hear a distant galaxy, see a different music, create their own fragrance rather than get hooked on a soundtrack; the child who has her own ideas about how the emperor is dressed; the lunatics and rebels who tell stories on the boundaries. Helga’s unusual story will take readers to worlds they never imagined—definitely a whole new ride. Time and again, the unconventional heroine and her eccentric comrades overcome ominous tyrants and black-hearted slavers, not by battling to the last beast standing, but by being the first beast to think differently. Helga: Out of Hedgelands is divided into three books which introduce the epic saga of the Wood Cow clan and their role in overturning centuries of slavery and tyranny. This story will continue in additional volumes of the Wood Cow Chronicles now in development. Over the series of current and future volumes, the entire history of the Wood Cow clan, the fall of Maev Astuté, and the coming of Lord Farseeker to the Outer Rings, will be told.

Author Rick Johnson I am a native of the Great Plains, having grown up on a farm in the Platte River Valley of western Nebraska. I love the wild beauty of the Plains and nearby Rocky Mountains--the too hot, too cold, too empty, too full of life extremes. Typically, the awesomely diverse and the awesomely stark are much the same, even as they are different. Although I have lived in Michigan, North Carolina, and British Columbia, the western plains, mountains, and desert are in my heart. As my day job, for over thirty years I have been a faculty member and administrator in higher education. Teaching broadly in the liberal arts, including creative writing, my professional publications include educational materials, poems, and 28 stories for young readers. During my spare hours, I have also collected and carefully studied the records of former times upon which the Wood Cow Chronicles are based. It is my privilege to bring this astonishing saga to light. The Wood Cow Chronicles have been researched and written with the irreplaceable assistance of Barbara, my beloved wife of more than thirty-five years, and our children. Indeed, the essential research into the history of the Wood Cows has been conducted during the odd hours of family reading and storytelling "around the campfire" as we say--even when there is no campfire! This research continues and grows richer as our family expands across generations and continents.

BTS: "Prophecy of the Flame" by Lynn Hardy Review/Blog Tour

            Title: Prophecy Of The Flame
            Author: Lynn Hardy
            Publisher: Resilient Publishing
            Length: 393 Pages
            Sub-Genres: Fantasy

            Blurb:

Five strangers are yanked from this world and thrust into a land of sorcery as they are granted the looks and abilities of the people they were playing. The Crusaders of the Light struggle to form a cohesive band as they blend twentieth century technology with the supernatural powers of this new world, fighting to liberate the kingdom of Cuthburan from the evil horde threatening humanity.

Battle is also waged within Reba, an ordinary housewife who has become the most powerful mage on the planet. She struggles to remain true to her wedding vows as she is drawn against her will to the arms of Prince Alexandros.

Excerpt

Prince Szames makes the formal introductions. “Arturo, sovereign king of Cuthburan, and Princess Szeanne Rose, I present to you, Reba the archmage and Allinon the druid elf.” I curtsy, eyes downcast.
Looking back to the ruler of this kingdom, I note the family resemblance. King Arturo’s salt-and-pepper hair was undoubtedly once black like Alex and Andertz’s. His eyes are the same sapphire blue as Szames and Szeanne Rose’s. The king’s voice holds the same inflection and mannerism as Prince Szames. The younger son also inherited his father’s strong, straight nose and square jaw.
“Your Majesty, I am honored.” Allinon’s holier-than-thou tone grates on my nerves. “Do you have any questions regarding the healing process upon which we embark?”
“Our son has explained the reasons behind our necessary participation. We have never before participated in anything magical. What may we expect from our roles in this endeavor?” Though his voice remains calm as he uses the royal plural, I perceive a building tension as he talks about his involvement in the supernatural. If the tension transmutes into resistance, the link could be jeopardized!
Allinon shrugs. “Your Eminence, you might experience a small amount of fatigue but nothing permanent, I assure you.” The king’s expression remains unchanged as our leader continues to explain. “Jamison is a master healer with ‘the gift.’ The gift is what we call the ability of someone who can use his life force to harness the power in our auras. In Jamison’s case it is somatic essence he uses. From the hue of her aura, Princess Zee-Anne Rose also has an affinity for this type of magic.” He turns to Szames. “You, Prince Zam-zes, possess an affinity for corporeal magic such as Merithin and Reba command.”
This is not helping. If anything, he’s more agitated. Let’s try a different angle.
In a quiet voice, I attempt to focus his attention on something other than his fear of the arcane. “Your son lies close to death. Therefore, we cannot guarantee our success. Time is of the essence. We can perform the healing without your participation, but our chances of succeeding will be greatly reduced. Unless you are willing to give yourself wholeheartedly into our care with absolutely no reservations, your participation may be more hazardous than your exclusion.”
Trying not to single out my new monarch, who will undoubtedly resent my eavesdropping on his feelings, I include the others with a glance in their direction. “You must ask yourselves, all of you: Are you willing to trust the intentions, motivations, and capabilities of people you have just met? I realize we ask much, but the life of Prince Alexandros hangs in the balance. There isn’t time to earn your trust. We have no choice but to ask that you give it blindly for the sake of your son and your brother.”
“You ask much,” King Arturo says. “We three represent the ruling sovereignty of this kingdom. We declare this not to justify our lack of participation, but so that you, Archmage Reba, know the measure of trust we place in your hands. We will shy from nothing, no matter the risk, that will spare the life of Crown Prince Alexandros.” As King Arturo embraces our healing as the savior of his beloved son, I discern the tension siphoning away into nothingness.
Bowing my head, I show acceptance of his gift. “Never in my life have I betrayed a trust given to me. If it is within our power, your son will be spared. His chances are good with so much support to draw upon.”
The tub is now half full with a liquid that has a slight silver sheen. The potion is diluted with the water necessary to restore Prince Alexandros’s bodily fluids.
Allinon rushes to take center stage. “Your Majesty, if you will take a seat at one end? Prince Zam-zes, you will be on your father’s left at Prince Alexandros’ knees. Reba will sit next to you. Princess Zee-Anne Rose, you will be seated on Reba’s other side, with a cushion to pillow Prince Alexandros’s head.” I shake my head, hiding a smile. No way I’m correcting the buffoon. He wanted to be leader let him figure out how to pronounce their names on his own. Our leader continues massacring the names of the royal family, “Jamison, you will sit between Zee-Anne Rose and Andertz. King Arturo, since I will restore the ebbing life force to Prince Alexandros, I will sit between you and Andertz. You both possess the strongest spiritual ties to your son.” The elf ushers the monarch toward his seat.
Either we have been victorious in answering all their questions or have successfully impressed upon them the urgency of this operation. The mentioned participants go immediately to their respective places. In his rush to be close to the king, Allinon forgets the rest of the plan.
“Your Highness.” I reach out, touching the arm of Prince Szames before he can assume his place. “Would you assist Jamison in bringing your brother? We need to place him in the tub.” If Charles is Mr. America, Szames is Mr. Universe. Why am I so sure I’m not dreaming when the entire royal family looks this good?
Prince Szames’s manner stiffens fractionally. “I am honored you place this responsibility with me.”
Taking his hesitation for a quandary, I explain, “You seem the least disturbed by what is about to take place, therefore, I am hoping you won’t require as much time to relax.”
Szames nods his approval, asking, “Will we commence immediately?”
Relieved at his enthusiasm, I expound, “Even with the water heated, it will weaken your brother. We will begin as soon as possible.” Then again he could be putting up a front. I can’t read him like the others. Turning my thoughts back to the healing, I approach Prince Alexandros’s mistress and her son.
“Andrayia, if you and Andertz will sit on the seat to the right of Allinon?” I squat to better address the smallest member of the healing circle. “Andertz, are you ready to help us work an enchantment?” He nods and I take his hand. “Prince Szames will bring your poppa and put him in the water. Your father’s shoulder is going to look really bad, but don’t be scared; that’s what we are here to fix. Okay?” He feels excited yet calm. If everyone had the faith of a child!
I sit, holding the hands of a prince and a princess. I close my eyes. Taking a deep breath, I center myself. The tingling sensation accompanying me since my arrival finds a focus.
The feeling resembles vibrations from an electrical device, though I don’t need to touch the carrier. It seems the stronger the vibrations, the larger the source of magic. It is merely a matter of pulling the outside magic to the large, white mass that is my center of power. I entwine and fold a small piece of the foreign magic into my personal reservoir, forming a bond between the two.
The difficult thing is to let go of part of my essence at the same time so I can share energy. I have no idea how I know what to do. I just know that I know, that I know what I know. . .
After examining the links to make sure they will hold, giving it a few minutes to establish a current, I watch the flow of the outgoing energies.
I open my eyes. Looks stable.
“Reba, remove the aura virus,” Allinon commands.
In the short time it has taken us to prepare for the healing, the prince’s aura has noticeably decreased. The writhing, inky mass of the AV is growing. No time to waste!

“We seven are joined in agreement.
Alex won’t be martyred by your treatment.

It’s of magic you’re made,
and it’s magic I wield.

Be gone from his body.
Against us you have no shield.”

Aqua light shoots out from my slender hands, heavy with power. The minor spell fails to antagonize the headache. Magic surrounds the AV. The blob rolls and boils as if someone has set a match under it. In a matter of seconds, the AV dissipates like fog under an autumn sun.
In the blink of an eye, a green haze settles over the wound as Jamison directs his magic. Allinon’s druid skills bring forth a coppery mist rising from the silver liquid, enveloping the lower half of the prince’s body. The mossy cloud intensifies. The mangled flesh melts, beginning to close. The coppery fog thickens as the shimmering liquid evaporates. The grotesque, scarlet wounds, standing out on his alabaster skin, are reduced to the pale pink of a carnation. Steadily his hue darkens to beige.
Second by second the pattern of the prince’s aura become apparent. Besides a small amount of blue corporeal magic and a strong fuchsia streak, his aura has no affinity for the arcane like his father’s. Whatever talent the purplish streak represents, he was the sole inheritor among his siblings.
The energy we invoked disperses. I look up from the vigil I am keeping into the eyes of a young boy. The child doesn’t look scared, horrified, or even slightly disturbed by the sight he has witnessed; against my instructions, I might add. He looks fascinated, in awe, and he is wearing a smile so wide, you would think it was Christmas. In the face of such enthusiasm, my lips curve and my eyes light up.
I turn my attention back to the patient. Before my lips part to ask Jamison if our healing has been successful, Alexandros, the crown prince of Cuthburan, opens his eyes.
Butterflies take flight in my stomach as he gazes at me with the most gorgeous green eyes I have ever seen, framed by long, thick lashes. Prince Alexandros gives me a weak smile. In a voice rough from disuse, he inquires, “Have I died and gone to heaven? Are you an angel sent to take me to the afterlife?” Having exhausted what little strength we restored to him, Alexandros drifts into sleep.
Blushing like a teen who received her first kiss, I sit back in my chair. Jamison and Prince Szames lift Prince Alexandros from the tub. Mind whirling, perfunctorily as a sleepwalker, I trail behind the men, waiting hesitantly at the door to the bedchamber.
Laying his brother gently back on the pillowed surface of the bed, Prince Szames whispers, “Barely conscious and you have already outmaneuvered me on the battlefield of her heart. No, Brother, I will not fight you for her love, no matter how my heart beats stronger and my blood races when she nears. I am not a fool. I will not wage a war I cannot win. Does not the prophecy foreordain her to be your bride?”
Though enhanced hearing brings the words clearly to my ears, the sounds are meaningless to my whirling thoughts as I try and get the picture of his beautiful eyes out of my mind.

I had honestly hoped to have been enthralled by this book, and there were moments I was.  After all, it is a fantasy, and parts of the fantasy drew me in.  However, I believe that this book would appeal to gamers, fantasy-lovers, and the like.  Unfortunately, I don't belong to any of these groups.  I found my daughter more interested in the book and the story (although she is a little young to read the book).  I told her I would save it for her because I am certain she would read the entire series.

For the positives, I am glad there is no graphic violence.  I am also impressed with the author's assortment of rhyming magic spells--not the easiest thing to do.  I also appreciate that the profanity is minimal, and the bedroom scenes are fairly nondescript.  I didn't need any of these things, but at least these were not a major problem.

I am grateful that there are so many genres of books out there, and most of the time, it is wise to stick to your genre.  Very few authors have the ability or the inclination to write books that cross "genre lines."  That's not a bad thing.  It ensures variety out there.  All I will say is that I would not recommend this to people who do not like video games and/or fantasy.  I think it is almost a given that this book will be big with those groups of people.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

About The Author:

Led by a series of dreams and encouraged by friends, Lynn Hardy began the journey to become an author. She stored her work in a computer file labeled “second job.” Writing began as a passion she could not contain and has become much more than she ever expected.

PROLOGUE

She walks amid the soft gray mist, the fog that rises up from the dew-softened earth. Her lover’s arms wrap round her, draw her to his broad chest, and she clings to him in return. And as always, I watch them from afar, from the lone north shore from behind the docks, listening to the creak of the wooden ship at my back and gentle lapping of waves caressing its hull. Overhead, seagulls cry as the sun begins to slip into its sea bed, casting a glow over the waters until they look to be on fire.

His lips caress hers and they walk together along the sands, towards the cottage stilted upon the rocks.

Relief floods me, completes me as I share in their satisfaction. The luminous cord, invisible to their eyes but ever present to mine, has repaired itself. At last he has given into his feelings for her and put aside his pride. This time took me longer than expected, but this moment makes everything I have done worth it.

Or so I tell myself. I try to ignore the stab of bitter jealousy in my heart. I feel this every time I succeed, whether I want to or not, because their love burns me. As always I watch, cursed to never feel such emotion again by the very man I loved.
I slip into the waters easily, my skin ready to burst with its newfound freedom and the ecstasy of the cool sea as I watch them from the drifting surface. The curse still lies heavily upon me and with it I am incapable of ignoring their feelings for one another. Even from here I see the brilliance of the invisible golden thread tying them together, glowing like the morning sun. When they listened to their doubts and fears, the thread was weak, likely to snap any second. But now it is twisted and tied so tightly I can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. They are one now, as they were meant to be.
From my vantage point on the waterfront I watch them hold one another upon the front porch of their cottage home. Always watching and wondering, I want to ask the unseen power that governs us whether their love is true. So long it has been since I last tasted the ecstasy of true love that I can scarcely remember now. Is it only an apparition, as I have witnessed so often through the ages? A midnight flight of passion, treasured words, looks, touch—all is meaningless to me now.
But once you were like her, young, hopeful. Until the dream was shattered, that is.
We will know soon enough. The cord binding them may be tight, but the true test is coming. Trials never fail to come, by mine or some divine hand. Already I can feel its forces stirring far in the ocean behind me, pushing the waves in rougher breaks along the shore.
Oblivious, they smile and joke upon their whitewashed porch, watching as the sun rises with pink and purple and golden brilliance. At first they do not see the harsh clouds gathering overhead, nor the high mountainous waves gathering in the far distance. But I do, as I know the being responsible for those waves and this test.
I have often wondered if my curse truly is nothing more than a mockery of my love for him. I give of myself to protect these lovers, but in the end nature will be the one to trigger my curse. Will the magic inside of me rise up to save them? Or will it sweep them away to a tragic, albeit romantic death?
In the beginning I did not hesitate to shake my fists at those clouds. The creator isn’t responsible for this. It is him, the being who has been given certain powers and, in my experience, done nothing but abuse them. I loved him deeply once for his darkness and strength, his power that can rival the most violent of hurricanes. He told me we would live forever. He promised me the sea, his world, all to do our bidding.
The glory of dawn fades around us but the couple only has eyes for each other. So they don’t see the colors drain from the skies and the waters and seep beneath my skin instead. Sunlight fills my bones and my soul, until I am bursting with new light, so my eyes reflect the glory of the skies. The waters are gentle around me, even as the winds begin to pull them in harsh circles, drawing them tighter, higher.
I know the lovers notice the change when I feel the sudden spike of their emotions prickling at the back of my neck. Fear is in their hearts though he shelters her in his embrace. And she is comforted, though in truth he is just as powerless as she. And the dark clouds descend, closing the distance between the calm and storm at an alarming rate. Rain pours over us and the waters churn and swell. I can feel the sea’s anger, its great fury, and its need.
I turn back, towards the house by the sea. They have made no attempt to flee to safety, even as the seas grow and the waves turn out a great roar. I can’t help but wonder if it is all worth it. Perhaps they are better off dead? Will they not be happier with their lives ending in the throes of true love, rather than watching the love eventually fade and burn up to ashes? Life is so much crueler than they understand.
Yet miraculously, their cord only glimmers brighter with its own light. In this moment, I know that their love will last. Their devotion will never fade.
Aching within my heart and ignoring that old pang of sorrow that they have found what I must ever forgo, I can feel the color amid the black and gray dawn pour into me, shine through the calm waters about me and the rain. The power of the curse sings above the winds, whispering my instructions, and I take the first stroke towards the cottage. I am pulled towards them, hating that it is his song that compels me to obey when I detest it.
“Cursed,” he once cried in a fit of rage. His temper has always been as restless and unpredictable as the sea itself. But his words had power behind them and I felt the effects instantly. Too late to take it back.
Pain such as I once could not dream of in my human youth and ecstasy such as none could fathom fill my being as I swim towards them. With unnatural strength I push through the wild waters parting easily against my sides, urging me faster.
Tears glisten in her almond eyes. I can see them clearly now as they trickle down her cheek and blend with the rain. His hand shelters her head, in spite of the fear in his heart. He stands firm for her and defiantly for them both.
The waves are growing in strength and so I call upon the wind to push harder and faster. I lift up my arms and am gathered up into the core of a high ocean wave, a high wall of pure water and a force of nature within itself. Color and light surrounds and fills me as I keep my arms outstretched towards them and welcome the pain. Light shines from every pore of my skin, shimmering and changing, inconstant as dawn until dusk.
I watch as their eyes grow wide, disbelieving, as the wave guides me to hover just above the whitewashed porch, mere inches before their faces. I prepare myself for the pain I’m about to embrace and sigh when the air between us shimmers as though lit with a thousand tiny stars. Time stands still in our tiny protected sphere, while rushing madly outside of the captured air.
My body trembles with the effort to hold firm against the hurricane pounding against my back. Despite the sting I do not stop. Instead I focus on their faces, the ones I’ve been led by a higher power to save. Relief, terror and awe emanate from their eyes as the ocean roars around us and shakes the tender foundations of the wooden cottage built upon the rocks. As always I know they will live happily ever after as I never could.
I stand until I can stand no more, until only the spray of harsh winds billows on. Only then am I convinced they will be safe and allow the waters to carry me back down to the rocks. They cave into one another as I limp back into the sea and allow myself to fade from their sight.
Soon I am strong enough to walk upon the shore once more and the colors I stole from the world around me shine yet from my eyes, ingrained upon my skin. Eventually they will fade, when I am pulled to my next mission, my next task.
As I walk away I can still feel echoes of their love. One day they will answer, when others ask how they survived, that they cannot remember what happened when the hurricane came to take them. They’ll push the memory of me away until it is nothing more than a vague dream. Perhaps it is best they remain ignorant of a hidden world they can never see.
I know I will never forget their faces, the ones I managed to save and those I failed. And as always as I walk on alone I can already feel others in the distance.
“Cursed,” he once said, striking his words upon me to satisfy his own fears. I will be with him forever, he says, yet not in the way I wanted.
Always I am doomed to walk the earth and seas, to find love and protect it. The one joy I can never feel again, I am cursed to preserve at all costs. Always to watch and never be seen, never touch. Always I will remain unchanged until I am freed.
My name is Orona and this is my tale.

"Jack Templar Monster Hunter Academy" by Jeff Gunhus Blog Tour/Giveaway (ends 4/20) WW

Warning
If you are not a Monster Hunter, click the back button NOW!
Last chance.
Continuing with this post will give monsters the go ahead to attack you.
You have been warned!

Now available the highly anticipated sequel to Jack Templar Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus, a 2012 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award finalist.

WARNING

Since I can’t be certain that you read my first book about the night I found out I was a monster hunter, I should start out with a warning.

First, monsters are real. Vampires, werewolves, zombies, demons; you name it. In fact they are more common than you could ever imagine. Second, this book is not make-believe. This is a truthful account of my life as a monster hunter and the mysterious circumstances that seem to constantly surround me. Third, reading this book makes you fair game for monsters.

You heard me right: the simple act of reading this book will attract monsters to you and give them the go-ahead to attack. Usually, if you were under fourteen years old, you would be safe by the Law of Quattuordecim, an ancient truce between man and monster that protects non-combatant children on both sides until sundown on their fourteenth birthday. I blew it by attacking a monster that was trying to eat someone I knew the day before my birthday. You’re about to blow it by reading this book.

If you’re over fourteen, you are already at risk for monster attacks, but in reality they are few and far between. Still, by reading this book, you are guaranteeing they will come after you. So don’t come crying to me if a rock troll chops off your feet or a harpy eats one of your eyeballs. The choice is yours.

However, if you decide to turn the page, you’ll be reading about the Monster Hunter Academy, a place no non-monster hunter has ever seen or heard about before. What happened there is not for those with weak stomachs or for those who are easily upset. There is blood and gore and death and, like it or not, some kissing. But there is also an adventure unlike anything you have ever seen before.

So turn the page if you dare. The adventure starts now.

Jack Templar

After barely surviving the onslaught of monsters that tried to kill him the day before his fourteenth birthday, Jack Templar leaves his hometown on a quest to rescue his father and discover the truth about his past. Joined by his friends Will and T-Rex, and led by Eva, the mysterious one-handed monster hunter, Jack sets out for the Monster Hunter Academy where he hopes to find answers to his questions. Little does he suspect that the Academy is filled with dangers of its own, many of them more terrifying than anything he’s faced so far. Learn more at http://www.jacktemplar.com.

"Scarlet" by Marissa Meyer Book Review (and an Update on My Just For Fun Challenge)

Goodreads Summary:  The fates of Cinder and Scarlet collide as a Lunar threat spreads across the Earth...

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
As much as I loved "Cinder," I love "Scarlet" at least as much and maybe even more!  When it comes to young adult fantasies/fairy tales, I cannot recommend these books highly enough.  marissa Meyer is an absolute masterful storyteller, and her books are completely free of two things--profanity and sex.  For me, this is the most refreshing part of this book.  It is over 400 pages of almost nonstop action with somewhat familiar characters told in a post-modern setting.  Yes, there is some violence, but none of the descriptions make me recoil.  My daughter is almost ten, and this is the first truly young adult series that I would be comfortable with her reading.

One of the things that amazes me is that Marissa Meyer actually makes me like her fantasy books.  i am one who generally does not like fantasy books, but once in a while, I find one I like.  And this series is definitely a keeper.  She explains things so that they somehow logically make sense.  And the links between the various characters are absolutely incredible.  One more thing--don't expect an ending that ties up all the loose ends.  Just like she did with "Cinder," she has left you somewhat hanging.  This is a book that I recommend you start with caution (but please read "Cinder" first) because once you start it, you won't want to stop!

I won this book, and I reviewed it because I wanted to.  No one asked me to review it, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

About Marissa Meyer
One of my first spoken words was “story” (right along with “bath” and “cookie”), my favorite toy as an infant was a soft, squishable book, and I’ve wanted to be a writer since I first realized such a job existed.
When I was fourteen my best friend introduced me to anime and fanfiction—over the years I would complete over forty Sailor Moon fanfics under the penname Alicia Blade. Those so inclined can still find my first stories at fanfiction.net. Writing fanfic turned out to be awesome fun and brought me in contact with an amazing group of fanfiction readers and writers. As Alicia Blade, I also had a novelette, “The Phantom of Linkshire Manor,” published in the gothic romance anthology Bound in Skin (CatsCurious Press, 2007).
When I was sixteen I worked at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma, Washington, affectionately termed “The Spag.” (Random factoid: This is also the restaurant where my parents met some 25 years before.) I attended Pacific Lutheran University where I sorted mail that came to the dorm, carted tables and chairs around campus, and took writing classes, eventually earning a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and Children’s Literature. Knowing I wanted a career in books, I would also go on to receive a Master’s degree in Publishing from Pace University (which you can learn more about here). After graduation, I worked as an editor in Seattle for a while before becoming a freelance typesetter and proofreader.
Then, day of days, someone thought it would be a good idea to give me a book deal, so I became a full-time writer. CINDER is my first novel, though I have an adorable collection of unfinished ones lying around too.
I now live with my husband and our three cats (Calexandria Josephine, Stormus Enormous, and Blackland Rockwell III), who go in and out, in and out, about eight hundred times a day. My favorite non-bookish things include Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, re-watching episodes of Firefly, and playing all manners of dress-up.
