Russian Dolls by Cristelle Comby

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This may be the fifth book about human sex trafficking that I have read in the past five months, and it never ceases to completely blow me away!  This book leaves the familiar Mexican/Hispanic tie-in and tackles another area I never thought about--Russia.

Let's tackle the first thing.  This book is almost completely free of profanity (the minor instances don't really bother me), and sex is only talked about.  Morality is high, and justice is served.  This is the first book in the series, and the ending left me practically breathless.  I realized that I was going to be left hanging about ten pages before I finished the book, but it is not one of those endings that upset me.  There is resolution, but there is a promise for more.  All I can say is that Ms. Comby needs to get the next book out as soon as possible!

I love mysteries, and this book was everything I could have wanted from that standpoint.  It also dealt with an important issue.  But all these things do no automatically equal a 5-star rating.  Neve and Egan are amazing detectives, and you never would have paired them up as amateur detectives.  But they make it work, and it is one wild ride.  I experienced it all:  anger, humor, suspense, and practically nonstop action!  This book is not for the faint of heart.

When I began the book, I liked it, but I almost viewed it as a chore.  I truly enjoyed the story, but I just didn't lose myself into it until a little bit later.  In fact, as I approached the last third of the book, I was so mesmerized that I lost track of where I was and what time it was!  I had to know what the outcome would be.

My heart was touched as evidence and stories emerged.  I found myself pondering this horrible crime against humanity, and I discussed it in detail with my mother. There is nothing like an outstanding, engaging story with a message, and I can assure you this book delivers just that.  It is a fast read, and you will probably view your world differently once you finish it.

UNICEF's End Trafficking Project

In recent months, I have read a lot of books about human trafficking.  I had no idea that this was such a great problem. UNICEF is working to end this horrible travesty.

UNICEF's newest Ambassador is Angie Harmon. As their Ambassador, Harmon is lending her support for the fight against child trafficking during Human Trafficking Awareness Month in January.

·         Harmon is appearing in Public Service Announcements to raise awareness about the issue of child trafficking, an inhumane and exploitative practice, and urge Americans to help end it. Part of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s End Trafficking project, the 15, 30, and 60-second PSAs will air in January. ·         An estimated 5.5 million children are victims of trafficking, an illegal enterprise that generates an estimated $32 billion in yearly profits. Human trafficking cases have been reported in every state in the United States. Rates are particularly high in California, Texas, Florida, and New York.

·         The U.S. Fund for UNICEF has launched The End Trafficking project to raise awareness about child trafficking and mobilize communities within the United States to take meaningful action to help protect children. I want to apologize for posting this a day late, but I have had some family emergencies that have put everything behind.  But it really makes no difference as far as I'm concerned.  January was the month to human trafficking awareness, but it doesn't mean that this problem is over.  It is still with us, and I am glad to know that people are working to end this.

I used to live in two of the states where human trafficking is big--Florida and Texas.  It is scary to think that as I was teaching students in both of those places, there was an illegal trade going on of poor, innocent children.  No child should ever have to experience the atrocities of this, and here's hoping that some day soon no children (nor anyone else) will be exploited in this way!

It seems that human trafficking has become something that has become a popular theme of books.  I have lost track of how many books I have read about this horrible crime in recent times, and I sometimes forget how prevalent this truly is.  Books like this are fantastic for pointing out the horrors of this slave trade.

I was completely immersed in this book from the beginning.  I almost could not put it down.  I found myself on the edge of my seat for the last third of the book.  I kept saying, "I just want to find out what is going on."  Because Cami Checkette has woven a story with so many twists and turns that you will not be certain who is on which side.  It will definitely keep you guessing.

I loved Cassie, and most of the story was told from her perspective.  Once in a while the author steps in and fills in some "holes" in the story.  This story has so many elements to it--marathon racing, romance, truth vs. fiction, and much more.  And guess what--the book is clean!  That's right--no sex, profanity, or any gratuitous violence.  You can read this, and your teens can, too.  There are so many positive messages throughout the book.  Cassidy learns that she is not a quitter, and she can follow through.  She works very hard, and she accomplishes more than she could ever imagine.

I am grateful that the author threw in some good humor.  I found myself laughing out loud a couple of times.  Oh, and the romance is never sappy.  I think the book is too action-packed for anything to be called cheesy or sappy.  I would invite anyone who likes an action-packed romance to pick this book up today!

How did you get started as an author?

I’ve always loved books, but never dreamed I could be an author. After the birth of my second son, I suffered from postpartum depression. My mom found me in bed in the middle of the afternoon. She told me, “Get out of bed and go write me a book.” I’m an obedient child. I got out of bed and started writing a book. Haven’t had time for a nap since.

Describe your typical writing process.

I am an unorganized mess. I start writing a story after I’ve had a nightmare about the inciting incident. Then I start daydreaming scenes and writing them down or using old and new nightmares to flesh the book out. When I get everything written I have to go back and revise. I joked with one editor that I was on revision #27. Sadly, it isn’t much of a joke. Someday I’m going to plot and outline. But where’s the fun in that?
