"The Grace Painter" by Mark Romang Book Review

I realize the blog tour has ended (as has the giveaway), but if you would like to find out more about the book, click here.

The Grace PainterThe Grace Painter by Mark Romang
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have to admit that as I began this book, I really didn't think too much of it.  But I have discovered that is a common response for me when it comes to thrillers.  Sometimes they take a while to get going.  And it seemed that there were so many characters to keep track of that I really struggled to wrap my mind around the entire story.  I didn't feel any connection with the characters.

The first thing the author did that began to turn the tide had to do with little Gabby and her vision--I won't spoil the story.  I was deeply touched, and I suddenly wondered if I would truly enjoy this book.  And even though I struggled to keep the characters straight, I truly began to connect with the story and characters.  Halfway through the book, the action was so high that I struggled to set the book down.

The best part about this book is that there is no profanity nor sex scenes.  Notwithstanding, this was as exciting as any thriller.  There is violence, and not everything works out perfectly every time.  The gospel message and morality is strong throughout the story, but it never comes across as being preachy.  I easily give this book five stars, and I think that if you like thrillers without all the garbage that usually accompanies them, this book is for you!

Excerpt from Poem

Your God Has Not Forsaken You

Oppressed by the problems around you?
Confused by the cares that confound you?
Concerned for what the future holds?
Afraid to watch as it unfolds?
Your God has not forsaken you.

God’s covenant will be with you.
His promises are ever true.
Compassionately He forgives.
His everlasting love He gives.
Your God has not forsaken you.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Poetry is something that is very close to my heart.  I began writing poetry in elementary school, and I always enjoyed reading poets from the great poets in history.  But quality, modern poetry is something that I have struggled to find.  That is until now.

Verna Cole Mitchell is a refreshing breath of air in the world of poetry.  It is evident that she can write about any topic from English to cats to family life to the Bible.  Her language and description are so beautiful, and many of her poems affected me emotionally.  The woman even wrote a poem about Edgar Allen Poe's writings!  None of the poems appear contrived, and I couldn't help but smile throughout the book.  She does have a fantastic sense of humor.

The best thing about this book of poetry is that the author is a Christian, and she does not make apologies nor excuses for her beliefs.  Even in her lighter poems, you can see her faith in an organic way.  She never forces her faith on the reader--it's just there.  I highly recommend this book of poetry to everyone.  You are sure to find some poems that will touch you deeply.

Follow these real-life stories as they take you on a journey to foreign places and extreme struggles. Beth Guckenberger and her husband, Todd, are the founders of Back2Back Ministries (based in Cincinnati, Ohio), which communicates a lifestyle of service by sharing the love of Christ and serving God through service to others. Back2Back Ministries connects willing workers to open hearts through international and local ministry opportunities. My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was pleased to read Guckenberger's previous book "Tales of the Not Forgotten," and this book did not disappoint.  It continued with stories of orphans and children who were sold and abandoned.  But the Great Defender, God, kept them safe.  He protected them and ultimately brought them to the other side.  God does see every child and ever person who is struggling.  I love the way this book is written so that you can do it with your child or in the children's ministry at your church.  There is room for the child to respond to the story, and it is written at an age-appropriate level.  I highly recommend this book!

"Payne & Misery" by Catherine Leggitt Book Review

Read more about this book and blog tour here.

Payne & Misery (A Christine Sterling Mystery, #1)Payne & Misery by Catherine Leggitt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this mystery! I can hardly wait to read the others in the series, and I have already told my mom that she has to read this book next.  This is the kind of mystery book that is somewhat reminiscent of Miss Marple and Rear Window.  Put all that together with living out in the country, a nosy neighbor, and a curious dog, and you have the things that contribute to an amazing mystery book.  This is definitely a cozy, clean mystery.  No sex nor profanity of any kind.  It is suitable for all ages but will probably resonate more with mature adults (do I qualify to be in that group?)

What I loved best about the mystery was that just when you thought you might have it solved, the author throws in another twist that you may not have seen coming.  I was proud of myself for figuring out much of the mystery, but the author still manage to surprise me on more than one occasion.  I found myself so in tune with the characters that there were times I was glad no one else was around.  I tend to get vocally involved with stories.

I also appreciated the fact that God plays a central role in the story.  There were several strong messages in the book concerning spiritual things without being preachy.  It's good to know that God even cares about solving a mystery.  I've never seen characters in a mystery turn to God for guidance.

"Before the Lights Go Out!" by Quiniece Sheppard Book Review

Book synopis:
If your idea of foreplay includes candlelight dinner, rose petals and whip cream, you are misguided. We have been focusing only on the physical while we are neglecting the emotional and spiritual needs of our mate. This neglect has lead to dissolving relationships, conflicts in the marriage, and internal struggles. InBefore the Lights Go Out, I outlined eleven keys to enhance foreplay, which will develop the intimacy in your relationship, thus allowing you to form a tighter bond with your mate. For single ladies, it is a guide to help you choose the ideal man for a queen like you because any man won't do. In other words, what is he bringing to the table besides himself? For married couples, this book will force you to look into introspection: examining yourselves and retrospection; examining your past to see where you went wrong and what you can do going forward to fix it. The key to a long lasting relationship is establishing intimacy, which mean knowing if he/she is "into you": body, mind and spirit. We will leave the lights on a bit longer to begin the emotional and spiritual journey towards a better you and a better relationship with your mate

Before the Lights Go Out! 11 Keys to Achieve Real Physical IntimacyBefore the Lights Go Out! 11 Keys to Achieve Real Physical Intimacy by Quiniece Sheppard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love the philosophy behind this book.  The author speaks directly to Christian ladies, and her focus is often on single women (since that is where her heart lies).  Most of what she says is Biblically sound, and she is not afraid to say what needs to be said in a very strong fashion.

I enjoy the fact that this book is organized well, and the message does not change no matter where you look within the chapters.  She is not afraid to stress the importance of sexual purity.  She does not care if she sounds like a prude or an anti-feminist.  She will quote Scriptures to back up what she is saying, and she also points out the consequences of sin.  I love the fact that she talks to men as well.  All too often, we women are told what we must to do so our guys will love us better.  Her stance is that men have responsibility, too.

I do have two minor criticisms.  There are times that her vernacular becomes a little more difficult to read.  I am not sure if the author realizes how she might come across, but I think that her word use sometimes seems more appropriate for public speaking than a book.

My other criticism is still minor but a little more troubling.  Some of her theology is a little unusual.  It bothered me to read some misinterpretations of Bible passages and apply them to areas where they were never intended.  I know that not everyone has the same interpretation of Scriptures, and this is true even amongst theologians.  But my problem is that passages that are not typically applied to certain situations.  I realize it may be a small issue, but I prefer for Christian authors to check out various sources before stating something as fact.  I know this may sound harsh, but I am one who believes in not being dogmatic when it comes to stating things Scripturally that may not be able to be proven 100 percent.

In spite of these criticisms, I would still say this is a refreshing read that can speak to anyone who desires sexual purity and/or a more fulfilling marriage.  Being a single mother myself, it was nice to see that I was already doing so much right in this respect!  I am glad I am not alone because I sometimes feel I am.  Had I read this book before I got married so long ago (and tried to date more recently), I would probably be single to this date!

Goddess Fish: "Untangling the Knot" by Deanne Wilsted Super Book Blast (ends 2/22) WW

UNTANGLING THE KNOT
By
Deanne Wilsted

BLURB:
“I did what?”

Twenty-eight year old Gabriella Bessu is St. Therese’s meticulous wedding ceremony coordinator. So the fact that she has mistakenly signed her newest couple up for an annulment, rather than a wedding, sends her Catholic guilt into overdrive.

But who can blame her? The groom is gorgeous and his two kids tug at Gabriella’s heart in a way that overcomes all her best intentions. Before long she’s in over her head, fixing her mixed-up plans and helping the children and dad come to terms with their haunting grief for the mother and wife they lost years earlier.

Can Gabriella untangle her own fears and accept the messy life that God has handed them?

EXCERPT:

Mandy’s accusations rang through Gabriella’s mind and guilt practically doubled her over. She dropped her bags inside the door and went into the bathroom to splash cold water on her face. The image that met her in the mirror had shame written all over it.

What had she been thinking? Ryan and the kids belonged to Mandy and she had been acting like a lovesick teenager. Scenes from the beach flashed through her mind; Ryan’s smiles at her and the desire she’d had to reach out and kiss him. Filled with self-loathing, she shook her head to get rid of the images.

Her dropped bags at the front door mocked her, so she picked them up and dragged them to her bedroom then crumpled onto the bed. One hand over her eyes, she let the images flood her. With her free hand she reached over and switched on her radio hoping to block out the accusing voices in her head. Her favorite news show was quizzing celebrities on the week’s news, but something about their conversation alarmed her. It took a moment to realize what it was.

She stared at the radio, stunned. If Whose News was on, it meant it was Sunday . . . Sunday!

And, for the first time in years, Gabriella had forgotten to go to Mass.

"Your Daily Bible Verse" by Rachelle Ayala Book Review

Bible Verses correlated by Month and Day to Chapter and Verse starting from January 1 and Genesis 1:1 to December 31 and Mark 12:31. Need a memory verse? or a life verse? Curious which verse correlates to your birthday or anniversary? There's a special verse for each of the 366 days of the year. Includes Bible Verse Memorization tips. [all verses from the King James Bible]

Your Daily Bible Verse: 366 Verses Correlated by Month and DayYour Daily Bible Verse: 366 Verses Correlated by Month and Day by Rachelle Ayala
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I think the concept behind this book is amazing!  Memorization of the Bible is something that does not seem to be as popular as it once was.  I don't think people even talk about it like they did when I was growing up.  I was a champion when it came to memorizing Scripture, but as an adult, I have kind of fallen off the wagon.

This book has a different verse to memorize for each day of the year.  All verses come from the King James Bible, and all verses are correlated to the month and day.  For example, the verse for January 1 (1/1) is Genesis 1:1.  My birthday is June 13 (6/13), and the verse is 1 Kings 6:13.  This is unique idea, and I plant to enjoy memorizing more verses as I follow the book this year.

Are you in need a quick devotional that will give you a verse for the day?  This may just be the book for you.  Everyone can read one verse every day.

Write Now Literary VBT: "The Blood Done Signed My Name" by M. Ann Ricks Book Tour

Are the sins of the father and mother visited upon their sons and daughters?
Undoubtedly damaged, Honey Lamb, like many, is a descendant of an unfortunate legacy of molestation, addiction, murder and bad decisions. For as long as she could remember, she believed the unhappiness she experienced was somehow bequeathed to her. The blood that surged through her veins seemed to be tainted and she often wondered about the DNA she possessed. Experiencing more than her share of misery at the hands of her mother, an alcoholic; the source of all her woes, Honey believed she’d overcome her seemingly checkered path all by herself when she met and married, Mason; a man she loves beyond her own understanding. Unfortunately, unsettling memories emerge to crack the veneer of her seemingly happy existence. Feeling unable to escape what she believed to be her destiny, Honey makes a decision that may have ruined her life. Not realizing God places people in our lives for His purpose, she reluctantly embarks upon a journey that will open her heart to a divine inheritance. Will she accept what God has already given to her or will she shun the invitation of salvation and allow her familial carnal legacy to continue to the next generation? Will she come to understand that Jesus’ blood redeemed us from a self-defeating existence because He became the sinful inheritance for us while at the same time eradicating it forever, giving us a spiritual blood transfusion that would change us all?

PROLOGUE
Northern Italy, 1918
He hadn’t washed in weeks. The countryside was crawling with “Kraut” and all he could do was think about the full lips that said his name with uninhibited desire. She made him feel invincible and he needed to believe he was. He would have done anything to have and to keep her.
Those eyes…
She moved over him like a cunning feline. Under her spell, he promised he would keep her brother Tanner quiet about everything. He had no idea how he was going to silence the man who had become his friend, but he wasn’t going to let anyone ruin their plans. As he walked back to camp after visiting a makeshift latrine, his thoughts took him back to their night together. Intoxicated by cheap wine, he’d agreed to the pact. She was beautiful, strong, and most of all, determined. He wanted to believe that they would have a good life once this useless war was over.
After settling into the muddy trench, he saw something almost imperceptibly move. Italy could have been a beautiful place if it wasn’t for this God forsaken war, he thought, rubbing his eyes. He was unbelievably fatigued; so much so that foliage seemed to be moving by itself. He closed
his eyes and opened them again to focus. Was there someone or something out there? He couldn’t wait until he was back in the U. S. of A. More importantly, he couldn’t wait to be with her. He could still smell her. She was a vision… a sweet temptress.

Pump Up Your Book Presents "The Bridge" by Stan Crader Virtual Book Publicity Tour

Tommy Thompson recalls with vivid detail the summer of 1967, when he was twelve years old and living in a small town in rural America. At that time in his life, all he wanted was a Honda motorbike, and he believed the smartest person in the world was his Uncle Cletus. The Bridge follows Tommy’s summer-long quest for the Honda and his love, Wendy, whom he pursues with the comical romanticism of a young boy.
During the course of the summer Tommy helps his best friend, Booger, cope with family tragedy. He is terrorized by Clyde Goodpasture, the biggest bully in the sixth grade, and the town of Colby is shaken by news that its hat factory will close. While he isn’t a religious child, Tommy faces these challenges armed with the few Bible verses that he knows and the support of his Christian family. Tommy has a knack for doing the right thing and ultimately makes a sacrifice that shows without a doubt that his heart is in the right place.

Stan Crader’s first book, ‘The Bridge’ spent several days on the best seller list for Christian fiction at both BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com. His articles about flying have been published in flying magazines and local newspapers. He won a Bronze Quill award from the International Association of Business Communications for articles written for his company’s quarterly newsletter.
Stan was born and raised in Bollinger County Missouri. Coming of age in rural Missouri provided him the material for many of the rich characters in his books. He credits the variety of jobs he had as a child and the people with which he worked for providing him his creative foundation.
Stan’s childhood jobs included grocery store carry out, a paper route, mowing lawns, farm equipment set-up, sawmills, and janitor. “You learn a great deal about people when you see what groceries they purchase,” Stan says.
After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Missouri, where he met his future wife, Debbie at a Missouri / Nebraska football game. It was Debbie who first made Stan realize that his childhood was unique.
They spent the early years of their marriage living in Bollinger County, Missouri. Stan joined the family business and Debbie worked as a community nurse. As a nurse, working with a caring country doctor, she began to collect stories of her own.
The two of them raised three boys and a golden retriever as the life experiences continued. Stan began writing Christmas letters. Friends and family began to look forward to the somewhat informative but largely humorous Christmas epistle.
Stan’s first novel was written after the encouragement of those on his Christmas letter mailing list and the recipients of the company’s quarterly newsletter. He’s flattered beyond measure each time someone who has read ‘The Bridge’ asks about a sequel.

You were made for more than serving God; you were made to know Him.
Intimacy with God—to know Him and be known by Him. It is what our hearts desperately need, but somehow life conspires to keep us busy and distracted.
For anyone who struggles when it comes to daily devotions, At the Feet of Jesus extends an irresistible invitation to set aside your duties and find the amazing peace and incredible joy that come from time alone with Him. Drawn from Joanna Weaver’s beloved Bethany trilogy, each reading in this 365-day devotional includes a Bible reading passage and reflection question. All-new material and “Going Deeper” sidebars are also woven throughout.
Discover for yourself the riches that come from spending a portion of each day alone with God. At the feet of Jesus—where true life begins!
Includes a unique One-Year Bible Reading Guide.

I always love well-written devotional books--especially when they are written by strong Christian women.  And that is the best way to describe this book.  Joanna Weaver  has taken best-known portions of some of her books.  There are several things I love about this devotionals.  First of all, it is divided by dates, and there is a reading for each day of the week.  Secondly, there is a Bible reading assignment each day, and you are encouraged to respond to each day'sreading.  What a novel idea--actually having to use the Bible to do your devotions!
This is a devltional that I plan to start in earnest in January.  This is not a book where you are expected to read it cover to cover.  Let me warn you--you will get overhwlemed it you do that.  Her devotionals are timely, fairly short, and sometimes even fun.  This book is really intended for women to regain power over the prince of the power of the air, and to grow closer to God.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
Joanna Weaver is known the world over for her transparent and life-changing books, Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World and Having a Mary Spirit. Joanna has appeared on a wide variety of nationally syndicated radio and television broadcasts. She is also a highly sought after speaker and shares her message at intimate gatherings and several high profile events each year. But Joanna’s greatest joy is found in being a wife and mother and her role as a pastor’s wife.
