This Day in History November 22, 1995

See page for author [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons
I can remember when this happened, and I remember that I was rather disinterested.  I figured I wouldn't like this movie, so I avoided it.  Yes, it was on this date in 1995 that Pixar animation studios released Toy Story.  And this was the first full-length, computer generated film.  I did not realize that Steve Jobs was the executive producer--no wonder it did so well!  It was the top film its opening weekend and went on to make over $361 million worldwide.  By the way, I like it now--my daughter loves it!

"Finding Nemo" in 3D Review

One of my daughter's all-time favorite Disney films is Finding Nemo.  When I heard that it was going to be released in 3D, I knew that this was one we would want to see in the theater.  This is one of the few Disney DVD's that we do not own--something I think I will rectify when they re-release it on DVD.

We had the opportunity to go to Seattle last weekend for a screening of this film in 3D.  I'm going to begin with the negatives of the excursion.  This was only the second time we ever have gone to a screening of a film, and this theater experience was as different as night and day compared to the last one.  We were told to arrive at a certain time, and it was at least 30-40 minutes after that time before we were even allowed in.  I am not holding anything against Disney or Pixar or anyone else, but I do hope that the theaters that are chosen for screenings realize how important it is to make this  a pleasant experience rather than a nail-biting experience with much confusion.  Maybe they learned something from it.  I just had to get that off my chest.

Once in the theater, the experience was great.  Radio Disney did a little pre-show that was mainly for the really little kids, but my daughter still felt it was neat to watch.  My mom went with us also--she had never seen the film.

I loved the little Toy Story short that came before the film.  It featured the dinosaur, and we really enjoyed it. Funny, cute, and a nice way to ease into the feature film.

Seeing Finding Nemo in 3D was really neat.  It had been a while since we had seen it, and I didn't know that Ellen was Dory's voice!  Okay, I should have, but I never considered it.  I may not agree with Ellen's lifestyle, but I agree that she is one of the best hosts and comedienne's out there.  Dory is my favorite character, and it was neat to relive the adventure of this film.  Maybe you are like me and never saw it in the theater the first time.  I know I didn't nor did my daughter (she's 9).

What did my mom think?  She was exhausted and slept through a portion of it.  But she thought it was a good film to release in 3D.  And she thought the parts she saw were cute.

So make sure you don't miss Finding Nemo!  You don't want to miss it!

Check out the official site.

I was given free tickets in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Disney Pixar "Brave" Movie Review

Brave
In theaters now.

This is the first time I have ever gotten to do something like this.  I was given advance screening tickets to Brave, and last night, my mom, my daughter, and I made the trek to Bellevue, Washington (near Seattle, about an hour and a half away) to see Brave before it came out officially.  We had no trouble finding the theater, and we ate at Red Robin just down the road from the theater.  We arrived with plenty of time, and yes, we had to wait.  It was really neat to be able to go up to the people with the clipboards, give our names, and get our stamp that let us enter early.

Once in the theater, we got fantastic seats.  And we were treated to a show including bagpipes and highland dancers from the Puget Sound area.  That was really neat to see!  It put us in the mood to see this great film set in Scotland.

The movie began with a typical Pixar short--nothing that terrific, but normal Pixar.  And then it was onto the movie.  I was blown away by the beauty of the scenery (yes, I saw it in 3D).  Absolutely gorgeous!  And I absolutely loved Merida and her family.  I had not followed all the press releases about the film, so I have to admit, I didn't know that much about the story.

I found the story charming and beautiful until one portion of the film came.  There is a witch.  I am used to that with Disney films, and that was not really an issue.  But when the magic spell happened, I literally thought to myself, "Are you serious?"  It made no sense to me, and it made things kind of strange.  My mom agreed as did my daughter (though she enjoyed it the most).

There were some very intense scenes--parents beware lest your children are too young.  I wasn't sure how it would end, but thankfully, it was typically Disney.  And I was able to excuse the magic spell to a degree.

I have to say my feelings are mixed on this film.  I think Disney missed a chance to truly develop the mother-daughter relationship.  The trailer I picked concentrates on the portion of the film I like.  It seems like there is so much more that could have been done.  The spell could have taken a different path.  The message came across, but why did Disney have to add something in that seemed so strange?

As I began to search online reviews after the screening, I found that the reviews online are mixed.  Maybe I am the only one who found some of the film weird.  I could compare it to The Princess and the Frog.  That was strange, too, even though a lot of that film is charming.

This is not a film I plan to purchase for my library.  I can only hope that Disney will put out some more films that capture my attention and make a little more sense.  I know I am probably in a minority amongst mom bloggers.  And I respect your views completely.  I just was not enthralled with this film, and I did not feel that it lived up to its hype.  Am I glad I saw it?  Yes!  And the screening was outstanding!  I plan to go to another one some time.  That was worth the experience.

I was given free tickets with no strings whatsoever.  I chose to review this movie of my own free will, and all opinions are 100 percent  mine.

This Day in History May 27, 1933

Well, on this date in 1933, Walt Disney released Three Little Pigs in technicolor.  And, of course, the big hit was Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?  Considering the Depression, this became a big theme song for people of the time.  The audiences absolutely loved this film.  I have always loved the story, and the music is just classic!  There seems to be some censorship issues relating to a Jewish wolf and a Muslim issue as well, but I won't spend my time talking about that.  Instead, watch the entire film below!

Disney's The Secret World of Arietty Trailer and Coloring Sheets

I had not heard about this new Disney film coming out called The Secret World of Arietty. It comes out February 17, and once I got this e-mail announcing it, I called my daughter over, and she watched the trailer and loved it!

To be perfectly honest, I was somewhat enraptured myself.  It look like something a little different.  I can remember hearing about The Borrowers in the past, but I have only just heard of it before.  I am already thinking this is a must-see for us.

And now for a special treat for my readers.  If you follow this link, you will find an attachment file I was sent that contains printable coloring pages and a word search from the film.  You will find a PDF file that seems to work well. I'm going to leave them as is.  If you have trouble downloading and/or printing them, let me know, and I will try to make changes.  This is the first time I have ever attached files to a blog post, and so hopefully this will work like the tutorial I read said it would.

This Day in History January 29, 1959

After yesterday's tragic story, I knew I needed something happy.  And I found it.  On this date in 1959, Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles.  I always found this one of the animated films that was somewhat unusual.  I loved that the score was Tchaikovsky's score for his ballet by the same name.

This was the sixteenth of the animated features released by Disney, and it was the last (while he was alive) to be based upon a fairy tale.  It was also the last to be inked by hand.  And it was the first animated film to be filmed in Super Technirama 70.  This film took almost the entire decade to make.  (Wow!)  During the filming of this, each shot of the film was modeled by actors for the benefit of the animators.  (And here I thought they only did that in the computer age!)

When this film was released, it was essentially a flop.  It almost bankrupted the studio, only recouping half of the filming costs.  I can understand the criticisms of its being too slow and having little character development.  This is not one of those films that I generally watch over and over again.  It is also very dark.  I always found that the scene towards the end where Aurora's prince comes to rescue her is quite frightening.
