BabyGanics Fine & Handy Hand & Face Wipes Review

I am so pleased to tell you about a fantastic product that I have gotten to review in exchange for my honest opinion!  I had never heard of the company BabyGanics, but when they agreed to let me review their Fine & Dandy Hand & Face Wipes, I was pretty excited, and I will share my thoughts with you.

First of all, here is some important information about the product:

Their biodegradable, SLS, bleach and paraben-free formula lets you clean all of your baby’s sticky messes with no worries.  Plus, special skin conditioners and emollients gently nourish as you clean.  With better skin hydration than the leading brands, you won’t want to leave home without them!

  • NO Chlorine, Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates or Toxins
  • Specially formulated with natural, plant-based ingredients
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Pediatrician and Dermatologist Tested
  • CLeans sticky hands and faces
  • Leaves baby’s skin clean, soft and fresh
Now let me be clear--we have no babies around the house.  The youngest member of our household is almost ten.  We live out in the country, and dirt is a way of life out here.  I'm not complaining--just being realistic.

These wipes arrived at the ideal time.  About a week ago, our water stopped.  We have a well system, and for some reason, the pump stopped pumping water.  We had to go two days with no running water--not a fun experience, I can tell you.  I won't go into details, but using the toilets was not a pleasant experience.  At least we had power, so I didn't spend a lot of time complaining.

After using the bathroom, we had to either use soap with bottled water (don't try that unless your desperate--the soap foamed up big time, and I had to use nearly a half bottle) or hand sanitizer (my mom did that, and her hands were really dried out).  I remebered these fantastic little hand wipes, and I have to tell you, they did the job!  No one else seemed to want to use them, but I have to say these were perfect.  They smelled good, and they cleaned my face very well.  My hands never dried out, and they felt clean.

Don't let the name "baby" keep you from trying these wipes.  They are perfect for any age, and I think you will find many uses for them.  Each package contains 30 wipes--they are small, but they do the job.  BabyGanics’ Fine & Handy Hand and Face Wipes retail for $4.99 and can be purchased at Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, Amazon.com, Diapers.com and Vine.com.

Be sure to follow the company via social media to keep up with the latest news, deals, and even contests!

I was sent a product in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

My Birth Story--Save the Children

The State of the World's Mothers (SOWM) report is Save the Children’s signature annual publication, which compiles global statistics on the health of mothers and children, and uses them to produce rankings of nations within three groupings corresponding to varying levels of economic development. We have produced the reports annually since the year 2000. Though the core report indices are the same every year, each year there is a new feature or story angle added to it. In 2013, the new feature is the Birth Day Risk Index -- the index compares first-day death rates for babies in 186 countries to identify the safest and most dangerous places to be born.

I have been asked to share my birth story, and I am quite honored to do so.  My experience will probably be unique due to several factors.

  • I used a midwife.
  • I had my baby at home.
  • My daughter lost weight due to insufficient breast milk
So here goes.  I got unexpectedly pregnant with my first and only child back in 2002.  I was one of nine women on staff who got pregnant that year.  I was already overweight when I got pregnant, but thankfully my good health kept my risk low.  From the beginning, I insisted on using a midwife even though my insurance refused to cover such procedures.  I had no ultrasounds and only the tests my midwife said I absolutely had to have done.  I chose not to learn the sex of the child, and the only concern happened in the last trimester--my blood pressure was up.  I nearly had preeclampsia, but due to natural products and finally bed rest in my last month, all was fine.

I went into false labor a couple times before I actually went into full-blown labor.  My husband, my parents, my sister-in-law, and my niece were at the house.  My husband was skateboarding in the garage when I first when into labor, and my mom had to convince him it was really happening.  It was the evening before my 29th birthday, and it looked like the unexpected would happen.  My child was going to be born on my birthday!

My labor was pretty intense, as you can imagine.  I can remember vomiting everything I had eaten, and there was one time I passed out.  I remember crying out in pain and saying I couldn't do this.  I had nothing to ease the pain.  My blood pressure spiked pretty high, and I lose enough blood that I almost could have had a transfusion--I probably would have had I been in the hospital.

My midwife did exactly what was necessary.  I remember she had to break my water.  And my sister-in-law was a little too loud at times as she helped me through the labor.  She and my mom were on either side of me as the moment got ever closer.  I can remember the intense stretching occurring as my child's head began to crown.  My sister-in-law told me to look in the mirror so I could see how close the child was.  However, I didn't want to.  I just wanted to focus on the task at hand.

I can recall the intense relief when I pushed my child out, and one of the first things they told me was that I had a girl!  I was so happy because although I had told myself that it wouldn't make any difference, I really wanted a girl.  I somehow knew this would probably be my only child--I think my premonition on that was right since I am now a single mother.

I know I said something about my daughter not getting enough to eat in her early weeks, and that is true.  For five weeks, she nursed almost around the clock, and my midwife's assistant did not really take care of issues that she needed to.  To make a long story short, my midwife called us in, and she discovered that Martha was not getting enough breast milk.  We had to supplement with formula, and God was good enough to keep my daughter safe during that time.  You would never know there were any problems like that now!

That's my little one at around six months.

Isn't she a doll?

And she is still a doll--she will be 10 next month!

What a difference when I compare my story to the rest of the world.  My daughter was actually bigger than this little one when she was born, and they even think my daughter was born early.

I believe that babies born worldwide deserve the kind of care I receive because infant mortality is much easier to keep from happening in today's medical science world.

This video reminds me of my early fears of having my little one.  I think all mothers go through this, but with the help of God, my midwife, and my family we made it through!

Let's End Hunger in America

Being an educator, I work with children on a regular basis.  Since I move from school to school and classroom to classroom, I am not often aware of the children who are going without.  I look at the classroom, and I sometimes wonder what makes up their home life.  Especially when a kid acts out.  On Maslow's hierarchy of need (something educators will know well), basic needs such as hunger and safety are the most important things for anyone.  How can a child learn if they didn't have breakfast, only have a meager lunch, and may not be going home to eat a dinner tonight?

I am grateful that I am part of the Global Team of 200 with Mom Bloggers for Social Good.  This past month, one of our campaigns has been working with No Kid Hungry.  It is estimated that one in five children in the U.S. struggle with hunger.  That means that in a typical classroom of 25-30, there are at least five or six students who struggle with hunger.  When the students are young, it is easier to get them to tell let an adult know that he or she is hungry.  But once they become teens, they don't want anyone to know.  It's not cool to talk about such things.  In fact, many kids would rather get the latest smartphone and computer game while giving up a meal.

So what can we do about this problem?  I think the first thing you can do is just be aware of it.  Don't turn a blind eye to it.  You can donate to the program directly on the link I gave you above.  You can even take the pledge on their page so you can stay up-to-date with their work via e-mail.

I honestly had no idea that this problem was as great as it is.  And I hate to say that things are probably going to keep getting worse if something is not done about it.  Get the word out there.  Involve your community.  It is the easiest thing in the world to turn a blind eye and do nothing.  But that is not what we should do.  If everyone thinks that your neighbor will do it, our poor kids are going to suffer.  And they are our future!

This Day in History March 20, 1928

Fred Rogers

On this date in 1928, my favorite children's television icon was born--Fred Rogers.  When I was growing up, he had an incredible impact on me, and I read a biography him that really inspired me.  I continued to watch him (on the sly) through junior high, high school, and even as an adult.  I e-mailed a fan letter to him before his death in 2003, and I even received an actual reply back.  I told him I was praying for him, and he said I was in his prayers as well.  That truly meant a lot to me at the time.  I think I still have that somewhere.

I so wish that children's television was like it was back then.  Oh well.

Potty Cover: Disposable Toilet Seat Covers Review

So do you hate public restrooms as much as I do?  Actually, as a teacher, I am even appalled when I see the state of high school restrooms in schools.  They are totally gross!  While I don't have a little one any more (she's almost 10), I still remember the absolute horror of going into a restroom with her and not checking the toilet seat first.  Yuck!

PottyCover is a disposable toilet seat cover for children (and adults!) that covers the sides and the front of the toilet, and it helps to keep away germs away from the skin.  It is made of non-woven fabric that is coated with a layer of plastic.  This is a very large toilet seat cover, and it comes packaged in an individual plastic bag that can be easily carried in a purse or tote bag.

A pack of PottyCover sells for $5.99 and it is available on Amazon, Ebay, all Buy Buy Baby stores around the country and at select Bed Bath & Beyond stores.

Okay, warning.  This will probably be the strangest picture I will ever post here.
That is how it looks before being used.
And after the toilet has been flushed.  You can see that it doesn't move around a lot (and our toilet is high-powered when it flushes).  I cannot stand the disposable toilet seat liners that fall apart and go straight into the toilet when you put them on the seat!  I won't even speak about some of the issues I have had with those.  But these stay put, and they are actually comfortable.  My only complaint is that the plastic bag in which they are stored is kind of hard to open.  Maybe I missed something--I sometimes do.  But it would be nicer to have those bags open a little easier.  A part of me also doesn't like throwing away this big liner (DO NOT FLUSH), but for ease and comfort, it's worth it.  Not to mention germ protection!  This is something I plan to keep in my school bag for when I have to brave one of those dirty toilets.  I don't know if I can get my daughter to use it, but then again, when approached the right way, I think it would be a good possibility.  This would be ideal for use when traveling.  I am thinking about those horrible outhouses that are always filthy.  I think I need to purchase a few for vacation!

Be sure to check out the company on facebook and twitter for the most recent news and deals.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Build a Playground With Kaboom!

My daughter absolutely loves going to the park and playing on the equipment.  In fact, it has been a major part of her life. I know she was pretty young when I started taking her.  It is a given (at least, I thought it was) that there will be safe, fun playgrounds in local areas for kids, right?

Unfortunately, budget cuts, lack of interest, and much more have contributed to playgrounds disappearing all over the U.S.  As a result, children are driven inside where they sit around, eat junk food, and begin a life-long weight problem.  It is called the Play Deficit.  It is a problem that has led to such things as childhood obesity, violence, and even failing schools.

The good news is that there is a solution to this dilemma.  Kaboom! is a non-profit organization that is working to build playgrounds in communities all over this wonderful country of ours.  To date, they have built over 2,000 playgrounds all over the U.S. resulting in playgrounds for 5.5 children.

It is easy to get involved in your community.  It can be as simple as getting the word out and pledging to save play in your community.  There are plenty of ideas listed here on their website.  Don't let this all-important, integral part of childhood be stripped away from our children and grandchildren.  Act now!

How to Teach Pool Safety to Young Children

Pool safety is one of those things that should become a habit at a young age. There are plenty of pool safety tools such as devices that make a loud noise when something causes waves in your pool or watches that your child can wear to alert you via a remote monitor when your child goes into the pool. While technology can provide peace of mind, teaching the basics of pool safety at a young age is just as important.

Keep It Short

Most young children don't have the patience to sit still for a lengthy lecture on pool safety. If you have a lot to cover, teach pool safety in short lessons instead of lumping it all together. It won't be long before your child starts to drift and they won't retain anything either. If, for example, you start with how to use floatation devices, let your children get in the pool with the floatation devices. Young children tend to be more responsive if they can do what you are telling them to do as you give instructions instead of just listening to you lecture.

Use the Buddy System

Young children tend to learn better when there is someone around their own age with them. This can be a brother or sister or one of their friends. If you invite one of their friends over, invite at least one other parent too. The more supervision you have, the more time you have to focus on what you are trying to teach. Let them get in the shallow part of the pool while you instruct them on pool safety. Let your child partner up with their sibling or friend and have one of them act out what you just said while the other one follows suit.

Be Repetitive

Most young children retain facts when they are repeated over and over. Start by coming up with five basic pool safety tips. It really shouldn't be any more than five. This is why shows like Sesame Street are so effective. Instead of just repeating the facts over and over, try making each point into a song or sing-song verse. This can work even if all you do is sing what you want to say. If you make it fun and repeat your basic points enough, your child should be able to retain some basic pool safety tips.

Make a Game Out of It

Young children tend to learn when it is perceived as being fun. This is the same concept that most schools use for young children, so why not extend it to the pool? Gauge the games you come up with according the age of the child. It can be something simply like let's see how fast you can get your inflatable armbands on. You can also make a little quiz game out of it and ask questions. This works best if you do this with a small group of children. You can even give them a small prize for each correct response.

Teach Your Children to Swim

The best way to be safe in the pool is to know how to swim. If you are not comfortable teaching your child to swim, you can easily find a swim course for parents and children at your local YMCA or other community organizations. Make sure your children know how far they can go in the pool. Even if your child learns how to swim, deeper parts of the pool may be too much for some young children to handle.

Set Family Pool Rules

Children tend to follow the example of others. This is true when it comes to pool safety. Establish family pool rules. These rules should be clearly written out on poster board or a large piece of cardboard so that they are clearly visible. Go over the rules for young children not able to read yet. Be firm and insist that everybody in the family follow the rules. This includes older children and adults too. If young children see that the whole family is on board, they are more likely to follow the rules.

You don't want to make the pool something to fear. You want to make it fun and keep it simple. The idea of teaching pool safety to young children is to instill basic pool safety at a young age to develop habits that will hopefully continue into adulthood.

Children and the Dangers of Sweets

With holidays, birthdays, and special family gatherings, it can almost be guaranteed that children will be tempted to overindulge in sweets--candy, cookies, cake, ice cream, and more.  In moderation, sugar is not really a problem.  But as we all know, an overabundance of sugar ingestion can lead to all sorts of health problems including diabetes, obesity, heat disease, and more.  It behooves us as parents to establish good habits with our children to protect them from these potential dangers.

It starts from almost the beginning of their lives.  Patience is the most important thing in dealing with this issue because your child will be bombarded with sweet things, and these foods will look appealing.  In fact, there is a lot of peer pressure to eat such items.  Why eat dinner or healthy snacks when you can have the good-tasting, quick-boosting rush of sweets?

Some ideas to protect your children would include offering alternatives to sugar-laced foods, limiting your child's exposure to commercials that advertise these foods, and not taking trips to the candy store.  You will never be able to ban sweet things around the house.  In fact, that will probably backfire if you try it.  Make sure you talk with your friends and family members about your concerns and expectations so they do not mistakenly provide unhealthy sweets to your child.  Consistency is key in this area, and in the end, all your effort will be well worth it.

"Children and Divorce: Children Teaching Children About Divorce" Review

I am a victim of a divorced family (even though my parents did remarry each other, but that's another story). Unfortunately, my daughter is also a victim of divorce since I had no choice but to divorce for our protection, but that is also another story.  Divorce is something that affects almost everyone at some point in their lives whether directly or indirectly.  In my daughter's case, she doesn't even remember her dad, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't affect her.  She has actually been mad at me in the past for divorcing her dad because it means that she is not like everyone else in her class.  They all have dads, and she doesn't.  She is now 9 1/2, and she sometimes goes through struggles that are similar to how I felt when my parents were divorced.  I do empathize with her.

I want to tell you about a phenomenal film called Children and Divorce: Children Teaching Children About Divorce.  It is a great educational film that is put out by Professor Child.  It is exactly what it says it is. Children speak candidly about several different aspects of divorce.  They are honest, and sometimes quite emotional.  So often children are harmed in ways we can't imagine within the divorce process.  Many portions of the film would not relate to my daughter, but I want her to realize that she is not alone.  She is not the only child who has experienced divorce, and sometimes she does feel alone.

At this point, my daughter has not seen this video.  She has had such a busy schedule, and I haven' t wanted her to watch this film during the holidays.  It just didn't seem the right time.  I do plan to take her through it bit by bit so she can thoroughly absorb it, and we can discuss it.  I love the fact that it is only children talking, and you don't even have adult interaction in the film.  The kids are all different ages, and they are willing to tell it like it is.  I notice there are other films on the site that deal with subjects such as grief and military families, and I am sure these would be outstanding as well.  I invite you to check these out if you and your children have ever experienced any of the issues discussed.  I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

This game is for PC.

I am a music lover by nature.  I majored in music, and I was a music teacher.  I have always been a fan of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.  I can't recall how many different versions I have seen.  I tried to introduce my music students to this famous work in many different ways but to no avail.  The music was often familiar, but it seemed like no mater what I did, my students did not want anything to do with this great work.

I am pleased to introduce you to "The Nutcracker Music Game" for children.  I have a 9-year-old daughter who loves music and computer games, and this game was an instant hit with her.

From the beginning of the game, she was taken in by the fantastic graphics, the fun games, and the music.  She had  no trouble jumping right into the game and checking out all the features.  She loved guessing the different instruments, and she was hooked the rest of the evening.

I wish I were still a music teacher.  This game would be a great way to get kids excited about this great work and teach them about music in a unique and fun way.

DNA and the Paternity of a Child

How to determine the paternity of a child
It is not unusual to want to confirm the paternity of a child. Luckily, nowadays DNA paternity testing is available to help accurately confirm whether a given man is the biological father or not. You can order a paternity test by simply going to your computer and searching for an online supplier of paternity testing services- this is by far the most convenient and confidential way of doing the test although many private clinics and hospitals also offer the service.
How are DNA samples collected?
To be able to carry out a paternity test you will need to provide DNA samples of the father and the child. If both are available and willing to take part, then things are pretty straightforward. The DNA testing company sends out a kit to your chosen address. Inside the kit you will find oral swabs, instructions and forms to fill out. The instructions explain how the oral swabs are used to collect DNA. You simply rub these inside the mouth of the people involved for around ten seconds and then let them dry for about one hour. The forms you need to fill out are pretty basic- you just need to write the personal details of the people involved and the email address to which you would like your results sent. Once you have completed this, you can send the samples back to the laboratory for testing using the address you find inside your kit. Couldn’t be easier! As soon as your samples are in the laboratory, you will be contacted with the due date for your results.
What if I have other DNA samples available?
It is possible to determine paternity using a range of other DNA samples. Oral swabs are always the most recommended sample because they are easier to collect, cheaper to analyze and more likely to provide successful results. However, there may be cases in which someone might wish not to use oral swabs and send in other samples of genetic material such as hairs, nails clippings or used Kleenexes.
It is important to understand in this case that some samples are better than others. You might want to keep in mind how you have stored the sample and how old it might be. The three samples above are amongst the most common samples used DNA in the hair root, and here is a brief explanation for the requirements of each:
Hairs: Hairs must be one of the most overrated DNA samples. DNA extraction from hair is only possible using the . In other words, if the hairs have no root attached paternity testing is not possible. Forget using cut hairs or hair you found in the shower as they most likely will not have the root. A minimum of four hairs is usually required.
Nails: Finger and toe nail clippings can be pretty accurate. With nails, the fresher they are the higher the chances of success. Ideally the sample should not be more than a week old. The more nails you can provide, the better.
Used Kleenex: This is the winner sample. Chances of successful DNA extraction are extremely high from a used Kleenex and it is only second to a DNA sample collected by means of oral swabs. Important is to ensure the Kleenex has been left to dry before sending for laboratory analysis.
There are many other types of DNA samples that can used – blood, licked envelopes, teeth, toothbrushes to just mention a few. Always best to discuss your sample with somebody at the laboratory before sending it in to get further information on how to store, package and send it. Irrespective of laboratory carrying out your test, there will always be an extra charge for testing with samples other than oral swabs.
How accurate is a paternity test?
Paternity testing is as accurate as science gets. If the alleged father is the biological father of the child, your result will show a probability of paternity that is higher than 99.99%. If the alleged father is not the biological father of the child, the probability of paternity will be 0%.
