Makobi Scribe Mother's Day Giveaway Event (ends 5/18) U.S.

mothers day gift ideas

Everyone loves their mom and always wants to find the best gift to make her feel loved and appreciated. These are the gifts I have found and would love to share with you. After you enter my giveaway head over to Makobi Scribe to see her mothers day gift ideas worth over $3000. Then enter the grand prize drawing of a $1000 worth of Karina Dresses.

I am so pleased to be working with Candleshop.com.  They contacted me to do an honest review of two of their travel tins, and I am very pleased to offer my honest opinion.

I was sent two of their travel tin soy candles by Serenity, and I got to choose the scent.  I chose awapuhi and noni fruit.  And I couldn't have been happier.  I love the fact that these come in nice little tins so there is no need to put any kind of tray under it to keep the wax from dripping or the area getting too hot.  I just used the lid.

Oh, and as the the smells--they were amazing!  The noni fruit was my favorite, but both were subtle and burned for a long time.  I had never used soy candles, so this was a nice chance to try them out.  The company did add in a couple tea lights that I have not had the opportunity to use yet--we tend to burn more candles in the summer.

The company was nice enough to offer a great giveaway for my readers, and I think mom will love this!  One U.S. reader will win two 7-oz Soy Serenity candles.  These will be the medium jar candles listed on the site. These soy candles will burn twice as long as standard wax candles, so you will truly be giving your mom something great.

In addition to this, I will give this same winner a couple books I reviewed within the past few months.  Read the reviews by clicking the link.

So all you need to do to be eligible to win is enter the rafflecopter below by 9 P.M. Pacific time on May 18. And then be sure to hop on to the other blogs!

Sponsored: $500 Coupons.com Giveaway and the Best Frugal Advice My Mom Ever Gave Me (Ends 5/7) U.S.

I am so pleased to be working with Coupons.com and the Fashionista Events Group on behalf of this sponsored post.

Well, that is my mom, and she taught me practically everything I know about frugal living.  That's right.  Things were tight when we were growing up, and I often didn't have all the nicest things in the world like my friends did.  We didn't have cable TV, Atari (remember those game systems?), and all the sugar cereals that were advertised on Saturday morning cartoons.  We had an old-fashioned TV set, and we were not the first ones to get a VCR nor a fashionable car.  We went on vacation during the summer, and we always had picnic lunches and stayed in Motel 6.  We even went camping.  (Some of this was my dad's doing, but that's another story.)

I think the thing my mom taught me about frugal living was that you don't always have to have everything that is the latest trend nor the passing fad.  You don't have to be first on the block to get the new electronic gadget or be the first to have an in-home spa or anything else fancy.  There is nothing greater than spending time together as a family and waiting for the price to go down and maybe even buy something "second-hand."

I am very proud to state that I am passing this frugality my mom instilled in me to my daughter.  There she is at a great event that cost us nothing since I am a blogger (that has become my newest frugal way of living!).  She continually asks for this game or that toy or even that special thing that her best friend has.  It was just the other day that she asked me if we could get a DVD subscription service, and I told her "no."  I proceeded to give her the reasons, and she knew there was no point in fighting it.  Mom's mind was made up!  I know for a fact that the frugality that my mom instilled within me continues to this day.  I still have the mindset that if it is not necessary or too expensive, there is no reason to get it.  However, as I have gotten older, I have also discovered that quality can be just as important.  The key is quality at a good price.

I am pleased to give my wonderful readers a chance to win a some fantastic gift certificates supplied by Coupons.com.  Five will win $50 e-gift certificates from Kohl's, and five will win $50 e-gift certificates from Nordstrom.  All you will need to do is enter on the rafflecopter below, and you will be entered to win.  This is open to U.S. only, and it will end May 7 at 9 P.M. Pacific time.  What a perfect opportunity for you to cash in on great Kohl's offers for your next quality, frugal item!  You, too, can put into practice what my mom taught me so long ago!  So be sure to enter today.

I also invite you to follow coupons.com via facebook  and twitter for the latest news and deals!

I wrote this blog post on behalf of coupons.com, and I was compensated for my time.  All opinions are 100 percent mine, and I was not told what to say nor how to say it.

"Life is Too Short" by Connie E. Sokol Book Review

Read more about the book and enter the giveaway associated with the tour here.

The Life is Too Short CollectionThe Life is Too Short Collection by Connie E. Sokol
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well, Connie has done it again!  I absolutely love her books, and this one focuses on being all you can be as a woman.  This resonated with me.  In fact, I have to admit that I she inspired me to do a dream board.  I was reminded why I have a blog and am working as hard as I am to accomplish my goals and dreams while being a single mom.  Connie is so easy to read and relate to.  She speaks in real language.  When you pick up one of her books, you will not be subjected to the normal "garbage" (pardon the expression) that the perfect women and mothers write about.  You know what I mean--the books that give you a guilt complex because your windows have not been cleaned in several years or you dropped your baby bottle on the kitchen floor and only wiped off the nipple before giving it to your baby.

I highly recommend any book by Connie Sokol.  You will not regret it.  And by the way--she can make a nearly 200 page book go by in no time.  And if you can only read a page here or there, her chapters are very short.  Read it while your baby is napping and while you are waiting for dinner to cook or burn.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Itzbeen Pocket Nanny Giveaway (Ends 10/24) U.S.

Itzbeen Pocket NannyMy bloggy friend is on our second baby and while she is still exhausted this time around, she has e a slightly better handle on what she's doing and when it needs to be done. But, it can still be difficult to keep track of everything that babies need and when you last did it.  Enter the Itzbeen Pocket Nanny which can be a great help for brand new parents, seasoned veterans, and all caregivers in between. The Itzbeen is a small electronic device about the size of a baby monitor that helps you keep track of all the vital stats about your baby such as when he last fed and which side you breastfed on, how long he's been sleeping, and when his diaper was last changed. Plus it has an extra timer if you need to keep track of when to give your baby medicine or other items. And, there's a clock, a nightlight, and the display can be backlit with the touch of a button so you can read it without turning on a light at night. It can stand on its own or be clipped to your belt for easy access anywhere. Itzbeen pocket nannyWhen she received the Itzbeen, she gave it a test run, and it  helped her keep track of things so she could focus on chasing her 2 -year-old and getting some work done. Each of the tracking functions can also be set as an alarm. So, while she timed her baby's diaper changes, feedings, and naps with the appropriate functions, she used the extra timer for a variety of things such as setting a time out for our older boy when he misbehaved. She even used it to time some muffins she was baking so she could go upstairs and put laundry away while they cooked (and not forget about them). She thinks the Itzbeen would be especially useful for parents of premature babies or babies with special needs. It would really take some of the pressure off tracking the medicines and extra care those babies need. And Itzbeen is also great for babysitters and other caregivers. Just hand it over to the babysitter, and she'll know exactly when the baby was last fed and changed, and she can keep track so you will know just what needs to be done when you get home. Overall, it's a highly useful product. Her only word of caution...don't lose the directions! There is no way she would ever remember the combination of buttons to push to set the clock! The Itzbeen retails for $24.99 and is available at baby retailers worldwide as well as online at Amazon, Target, and other online retailers. To find a store near you, visit Itzbeen.com.

This review was completed by Sarah B. Sarah is a military wife and stay at home mom to a 2 and a half year old and a 2 month old. She loves to bake, craft, and play with her little guys, and enjoys blogging about her experiences as her children teach her how to be a parent. Read about all her adventures at The Education of a Stay at Home Mom. Sarah received the above product through Sublime Media Connection in exchange for an honest review. Momumental by Jennifer Grant Book Review

Adventures in the Messy Art of Raising a Family

One mom’s humorous and candid memoir shows would-be supermoms how to create a realistically balanced family life without losing their minds.
A longtime former writer for the Chicago Sun-Times and now a columnist for the Chicago Tribune, Jennifer Grant is no stranger to the common reader. MOMumental is a foray into the enormously amusing, creative, and taxing process of raising a family and a starkly honest memoir that mothers everywhere can identify with. With narrative that is chock-full of humorous, poignant stories drawn from her everyday adventures as a mother and wife, Grant presents an entertaining and inspirational book that will give readers uncommon insights about being an intentional parent.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jennifer Grant is mother to four children and author of Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter (2011). For more than a decade she wrote for papers in the Sun-Times newsgroup. Currently she freelances for the Chicago Tribune and is a regular contributor to her.meneutics,Christianity Today magazine's blog for women. Grant is a Wheaton College graduate who received her master's in English and Creative Writing from Southern Methodist University. She lives outside of Chicago, IL.

Find out more about the book here.

MOMumental: Adventures in the Messy Art of Raising a FamilyMOMumental: Adventures in the Messy Art of Raising a Family by Jennifer Grant
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I come across a good parenting book, I am instantly mesmerized.  Add a Christian perspective to it, and I am definitely hooked.  Jennifer Grant has written a book that is definitely all that and more.  Over my years as a mother, I have read several "mother" books, but this is probably one of the best I have ever read.  It is practical, humorous, and above all, non-condemning!

In the past, I have read mothering books that made me feel like I had to do A, B, and C in order to be a better mom.  Oh, and if I didn't X, Y, and Z, I was going to mess my child up for life!  I am so glad that Jennifer Grant does not take that view.  She even shares stories of other's mistakes (including hers) that makes mother realize that it we are going to mess up (and sometimes mess up big!).  And it is okay.  We do the best we can with the knowledge we have at the time.

I share her view of little kids.  I struggled through my daughter's early years, but I am enjoying her now.  It does get easier.  Even though there are other issues that will arise, I am glad my daughter is the age she is now.  No more diapers or bottles.

My favorite page in the book was her take on the "Serenity Prayer."  I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but I definitely want to frame a copy for my wall!  I also was comforted when she talked about the different "bad mom" names she has had to endure over the years.  I know how it feels to have someone criticize your parenting skills.  Not fun at all!

I have no criticisms at all except she needs some companion guide to this that has some of her inspiring sayings.  It would be neat to do this as a light, fun mom's study with some kind of interactive workbook.  But until that happens, I will just go back and read certain parts when I get to feeling down as a mother.

I highly recommend this to every mother who has ever felt like a bad mom or had a bad mom day.  It is a quick, uplifting read that will inspire and encourage you.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Well-Spoken Wednesday--The Amazing Mom Book by John MacIntyre Book Review

Summary from goodreads:  The Amazing Mom Book is a fresh, charming and funny look at motherhood in all
its manifestations. From chapters on moms in other cultures to royal moms to
mythological moms to mothers-in-law and mothers run amok of the law, this is a
rollicking look at the most important role in human history.

Also included in The Amazing Mom Book:
- Moms giving birth, moms in the
workplace, moms in the animal kingdom
- From Ma Barker to the Queen mum, from
Jackie Kennedy to Roseanne, profiles of world's most interesting moms
- Top 5
lists on everything from the Top TV moms of all time to the Top Five ailments
suffered by babies
- Did You Knows"
- Surveys and statistics
- And
much, much more!

The Amazing Mom book is the most comprehensive collection of facts, quotes,
profiles, dates and statistics about mom. For anybody who has a mom, you must
read The Amazing Mom Book.
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I have to admit that this book really did not grab my attention like I thought it would.  I am a student of history, and the premise of the book is interesting enough.

I did find several of the stories within the book fascinating even if they were outdated.  I do not fault the book for not having the most up-to-date statistics-tit is a good reminder at how fast things change and how much the internet has spoiled us.  Realizing that were strong women as far back as the ancient times does fascinate me.  I was also struck by how much things have changed for moms in just 100 years!  I am so grateful for modern conveniences!

What concerned me most about the book was the misinformation contained within the book-tmost notable to me the dat of The Wizard of Oz was wrong!  Judy Garland is one of my favorites, and not to know the correct date concerned me.

I realize that errors do happen in books, but it would seem that the author cfould do more research.  Come to think of it, he never even cites his sources.  I thought books were required to do that, but what do I know?

It also bothers me when there are a lot of editorial errors in a final edition.  I know I am being nit picky, but I just cannot help it.  I feel is behooves me to tell you my true feelings.

In conclusion, I wish I could say I loved this book. The cover is pretty, and I am sure it would make a great gift for any mother out there.  After all, the author's focus is to venerate mothers, and he certainly accomplishes that.  And as long as most of his facts are right, there are some fascinating stories encouched in the pages of this book.
