This Day in History March 30, 1971

This should be welcome news for all the coffee lovers out there.  And I feel a sense of pride sharing something that is just down the road from me (relatively speaking).  On this date in 1971, the first Starbucks opened.  It opened at Pike Place market in Seattle, Washington.  I had no idea that the name came from the first mate in Moby Dick, Starbuck.  The original partners were English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker.  Alfred Peet was their inspiration because he sold high-quality coffee beans.  Howard Schultz joined the team in the 1980's, and that is when things really began expanding (he became director of retail operations and marketing).  I'm sure glad it's still around--even if it has become rather expensive.  I tend to still prefer local coffee shops, but in my city, Starbucks cannot be beat.  I have to go elsewhere to get the better, less expensive coffee.

Tyler's Coffee Review

My mom and I are definitely coffee connoisseurs.  We practically have to have our coffee first thing in the morning.  In general, coffee does tend to be acidic, and with the amount of coffee we consume (2-4 cups per day), it can sometimes upset our stomachs.  It doesn't happen often, but it's not pleasant when it does.  We usually have to take some kind of antacid when it does happen.

My mom and I recently got the chance to review Tyler's Coffee.  This coffee is known as acid free coffee, and both my mom and I can tell the difference.  Their coffee is still high quality and all natural without the bitterness and acidity of normal coffee.  As a bonus, their coffee comes in both original and decaf.  In fact, their computerized "Z-Roasting" System optimizes roasting time in order to ensure that their coffee is Acid Free with maximum flavor.

My mom and I both love the benefits of Tyler's coffee.  There is a distinct difference, and it is worth it to keep the acidity down.  However, we both wish that Tyler's coffee offered a dark roast.  We love our dark coffee.  In fact, I am one of those people who prefers coffee as dark as possible (even though I add cream and sweetener to it).  We are not too crazy about the medium roast of any brand of coffee, but again, the benefit far outweigh any complaints.

This is our wonderful coffee pot, and you can see how we love our coffee containers for traveling.  I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the coffee bag because it was immediately put in our coffee canister before I could even get a picture of it.  But this was the coffee pot we used, and I can highly recommend this coffee--especially to those with coffee sensitivity.  If you struggle with the acidity of coffee, this is definitely the coffee for you!

My thoughts:  I do not own a Keurig, but I know they are fantastic machines, and there are many times I wish I had one.  I love the fact that you can make coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and even iced coffee and such.  You know how the cost of everything is going up, and who has the money to go down to coffee shop every day and get their fix?  I don't, and this is the perfect machine as we are in the middle of fall and beginning to look towards winter.  And remember, this would be a great Christmas gift!

Healthy Coffee from ecoffee shop (tea too!)

I will admit right here and now that I was not always a coffee drinker.  I wouldn't drink tea either.  I couldn't stand the flavor, and even when my husband begged me to have a cup of coffee with him, the best I could do was have a hot chocolate.  No coffee or tea--end of story.


At some point, my friend from England sent me coffee and tea to try, and I actually began to like them.  But I was still not hooked.  As I look back on how my coffee habit began, I really can't recall exactly when I began drinking coffee regularly.  My mom got me hooked, and now I struggle ig I go without my morning coffee (not to mention my afternoon and evening!).  Once in a while, I will still have my tea when I want something a little bit different.


I am always looking for new coffee to try, and I think I happened on a fantastic site--ecoffee shop.  If you cannot find the kind of coffee you like on their site (they sell tea, too), then I would venture to say that you will not find it elsewhere either.

My thoughts are somewhat mixed.  I am not completely sold.  It is not an easy product to use, and I don't know how practical it is to use it away from home.  It does take some getting used to.  I think in time it will work better.  I used it a little bit this past period, and I will probably use it a little next month.  It takes time to use new products.  It is certainly better than a tampon, but I am not sure about it.   I was concerned that I would struggle to urinate with the Diva Cup inside.  No problem, whatsoever. It says you can leave it in safely for 10 hours.  I haven't used it for that long.  So my feelings are somewhat mixed. You can buy the Diva Cup here. Seattle's Best Coffee Review

First and foremost, I am a coffee addict--I admit it.  If I go a day without coffee, I must be ill.  I have two cups in the morning and often one in the afternoon. I love practically every kind of coffee--lattes, cappuccinos, coffee with any kind of cream and splenda.  In a pinch, I will drink the coffee black, but that is not my preferred way.  I also like iced coffee and frozen coffee--I'm sure you get the idea.

It's actually kind of funny because the vast majority of my life, I couldn't stand coffee.  I used to watch my grandpa and mom drink cup after cup--sometimes six a day.  It was Martin who got me hooked on coffee (my friend from England).  I couldn't stand coffee or tea, and he sent me both from England.  And I developed a taste for both.  And then a few years ago, I got hooked on coffee--I had to go buy a coffee pot!

Now, at first, I was not terribly particular about the brand of coffee I got.  I tried them all.  My mom prefer Starbucks--after all, we do live in the Pacific Northwest.  And I will say that in the past, I have not been impressed with Seattle's Best Coffee.  I don't know why, but the taste just was not my thing.

When the chance to fry a free sample of Seattle's Best Coffee came up, I decided to give it a try again.  I noticed when it arrived that the packaging was different, and there was a number on the bag--5.  I did not even know what that meant.

One day shortly after that sample arrived, we ran out of our normal coffee.  So I substituted the free sample of Seattle's Best--hoping it would be good.  Here's the proof.  It was not until my mom and  I were done with our coffee that morning that I remembered that the coffee was not our normal brew.  And my mom and I did not even notice!  This coffee was so good and dark and rich like our normal brew.  I was quite pleased.  So pleased that I went out and bought a full-size pack of Seattle's Best coffee for us!

I have since learned that Seattle's Best has instituted a new level system.  My mom and I prefer dark coffee so it makes sense that level 5 would be our favorite.  But they have levels 1-5--something for every taste.  In fact, they have all sorts of drinks that I have not even looked for.  Check out their brand and products here.

My mom and I have since talked about the necessity to cut back on the price of coffee, and Seattle's Best is a moderately priced brand for a great price.  I think it will become one of our staples now that I know what level we like.  I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Twinkle Tuesday--Torani Sugar Free Coffee Syrup Review

Well, summer has arrived in the Pacific Northwest, and all I can say is make me a nice iced coffee now!  I usually have about 3 cups or so of coffee per day--2 in the morning, one in the afternoon/evening.  Since I have to watch what I eat and drink as far as calories go, I am so glad that they make sugar free coffee syrups!  We have an espresso maker,  and I know how to make a mean cappuccino and iced coffee.

This wonderful product from Torani is a staple for me year round. Notice that it is sugar free.  In fact, they have a whole line of sugar free syrups.  I have tried and loved the vanilla, caramel, and raspberry (believe it or not!).  The flavor is never compromised by the absence of sugar.  The flavor is sublime!

Until I visited their website,  I had no idea how many products they offer.  I knew they had more coffee syrup flavors, both regular and sugar free, but my struggle sometimes is finding them in the stores.  I am sure it is because I no longer live in a big city.  But as long as I have sugar free vanilla, I am happy!

I highly recommend you check out their website for recipes using their products, and of course, you can check out where to purchase their products.  I cannot recommend their products highly enough--especially for those who are carefully watching our sugar intake.
