Guest Post: How to Have a Safe, Fun and Educational School Trip with Your Students

School field trips can be rewarding, but more often than not, you get an earful off parents, because little Jimmy fell over and sprained his wrist. Unfortunately, you’re not god, and incidents will happen when you leave the classroom. But you shouldn’t let that deter you from bravely booking tickets to see a Hamlet performance or visit the Science museum. Everyone benefits from an informative day outside of the classroom.

Reign In Challenging Behaviour

Before the field trip goes ahead, make sure that every child is aware of your behavioural expectations. Level with them. Children respond well to being treated maturely; not patronised because of their age. Treat them like brats and they’ll act accordingly.

Tell them that you hope it can be a fun day for everyone, but that you expect adult behaviour. Let them know that you’re taking a zero tolerance stance towards any disruptive attitudes and that their parents have been notified that, by allowing their child to take part on the trip, they’re responsible for picking up their kid, should their child act out.

Once all the heavy stuff is out of the way, focus on the positive, and say that you have every faith that they’ll make you proud in public. Maintain that you think no-one will be a problem.

Kit List

Kit lists are so important. Make sure that everyone has weather-appropriate clothing, water, snacks, and backpacks to carry all the necessities. Sopping wet, cold kids really won’t enjoy themselves.

Always Enlist Help

Ideally, you’ll want help from fellow teachers and parents on this trip. They can help you keep the class in order and you can play off each other’s strengths. A fierce teacher that strikes fear into the hearts of the children is a necessary ally, as well as an empathetic soul that can deal with any emotional problems.

If you’re taking parents, sit down with them and let them know how much jurisdiction they have over the children. Tell them what to do in certain situations, so they don’t feel uncomfortable about taking control of problematic incidents. Parents should know the protocol, in the event of an emergency, and be notified of any special needs a child has in the group, whether someone is diabetic or allergic to a substance.

Set Up Buddy Teams

Before the day, draw up buddy teams, so no child (however unpopular) is left out. Keep the list to hand and make sure everyone stays together. Severely reprimand those who leave their partner alone.

Give every child your phone number, so they can contact you in an emergency or if they’ve been left behind. No matter where you plan your school trip, no-one should be wandering around by themselves.

Allow Freedom

Obviously, every field trip is unique, and an element of freedom should be granted. On the other hand, don’t allow any unacceptable behaviour on the trip, such as physical violence or swearing. Excitement is fine, but get ready to reign in exuberant behaviour before it escalates.

Where you can, tire out students by playing games in nearby parks. Get them to burn off some beans.

Rock 'N Learn Ready For School DVD Review

Photobucket

I am back with another wonderful review of a Rock 'N Learn DVD!  This is the fourth review I have done of one of their DVD's, and if you haven't guessed it, I am a fan!  I love the fact that they integrate music into learning.  Since I am a former music teacher (and I sometimes get to sub in that area), I love what this company does.  They have a wide array of DVD's for children that cover everything from preschool learning to math to science to social studies to other languages!  There is nothing better than putting on a DVD for your children that actually teaches them something.

Photobucket
This is the DVD my daughter and  reviewed.  Now you have to understand something.  My daughter is nine, and we reviewed this with the idea that we would be giving this to one of her younger friends.  We know a little boy who is very active--he is the brother of my daughter's best friend--and he is three, if I remember right.  We watched this with him in mind.  And we are certain that he would love it.  Actually, my daughter was pretty enraptured with it even though she is much older.  There is something about the music and the graphics that draw kids in.  She loved the alphabet at one point and said it was really cool how they did it.

Photobucket

This DVD is a little different from the other Rock 'N Learn DVD's I have seen.  It is geared towards preschoolers, and it is intended to get them ready for school.  It teaches skills such as tying shoes and buttoning shirts.  It also teaches some basic skills like shapes, counting, and the alphabet.
Photobucket

As you can see, this is only available until the end of the month at Sam's Club, so if you want it, you need to get it now!  Even if your children are too old for this, think of how neat this would be for a little boy or girl in your life.  I can assure you that any mother with children aged 2-5 would love this.  And the price is very reasonable.  This will be a DVD that will be watched again and again, and it will actually teach the kids something!

Be sure to follow them on facebook and twitter.

You will want to read what others in the team are saying about this DVD, so I invite you to check out their reviews below:

"Open House" Gift for My Daughter's Teacher

I am one of those parents who always believes in truly celebrating my daughter's teachers.  Since I was in the classroom for all those years (I know I'm a sub now, but I have not forgotten), I know how often teachers are not appreciated and only contacted when there is something wrong.  I am one of those parents who likes to go beyond the norm and truly let the teachers know they are appreciated and loved in unusual ways.

One of these ways is something I started last year.  There is an Open House every year at my daughter's school the week before classes begin, and I rely on my fellow bloggers for ideas.  Last year, it was the First Day of School Survival Kit.  I really didn't think I would be able to top last year--her teacher loved it!  But here is what we are doing this year:

This is a Teacher School Supply Cake, and it is not my idea.  Check out this blog post for a complete tutorial.  I follow the tutorial fairly closely, and I have to admit that I thought it was going to be more difficult than it was.  But I will tell you that from start to finish, it only took about 30-45 minutes.  It probably took more time to get all the supplies.  I used a foam cozy ($1 at Walmart) for the pencil holder.  My daughter had the most fun putting the flowers on it.
I think she is pretty proud of her accomplishments!  I can hardly wait for my daughter's teacher to see this!  She has the same teacher as she did last year, so I am sure she will be surprised.  And I expect that all the other teachers might be just a bit jealous!

Beanitos Back to School Healthy Snack Review

By now, back to school is either a reality or a soon-to-be reality for those of with kids.  And even if you don't have kids, you know that summer is drawing to an end.  Sometimes it is hard to find snacks that are healthy, taste good, and are something that your kids will eat.

Enter Beanitos! Beanitos®, The Original Bean Chips™ were created by people who want snacks that are not full of empty calories.  Beanitos began back in January 2010, and it is a low glycemic, high fiber, gluten-free, high protein, great-tasting snack.  There are several different flavors.

My family and I had the opportunity to review a big box of these chips, and they were definitely a hit.  My daughter loved the cheddar cheese, and I loved the chipolte BBQ.  My mom found the pinto bean rather bland, but with a dip, it was amazing.  The black bean had more flavor than the pinto bean.  Taste was certainly not sacrificed.

My favorite thing about these is that they are filling!  When you eat something that is made with beans and has such a significant amount of fiber, you really can't go wrong.  While the calories are a little higher than other similar snacks, it is the right kind of calories--not empty!

The uses for these chips are endless.  You can put them in your kid's lunches or save them for afternoon snacks.  In my case, I will also be taking them for my lunch.  I'm sure my mom will be snacking on them as well.  I look forward to dipping them in hummus and yogurt dips!

I was wondering where I could buy these locally, and I was happy when I discovered that I can get them at our local supermarket!  What I can say is that if a place like Yelm has them, there is no doubt you can find a place near you.  Be sure to check out where to buy on their site.

As you are busy checking out there site, be sure to follow them via social media!

Blogorama Bonanza Back 2 School Sponsor Spotlight: Kidini Bully Prevention & Child Safety Program Review

For most of my daughter's school life, she has struggled with bullies.  I can remember all the way back to kindergarten when she struggled with a kid who kept bothering her.  And when she was in second grade, she was even sexually harassed by a sixth grader.  I am glad to know that in every instance, my daughter knew what to do.  And the school was wonderful in taking very swift action.

Unfortunately, bullying is something that most children will experience during their school career (and possibly beyond), and I am so glad to be able to tell you about a terrific resource to help kids do just that.  It is the Kidini Bully Prevention & Child Safety Program.  This is a fantastic resource that includes a parent/child activity book, two CD's (song only CD and stories/song CD), and eight trading cards.  I had the chance to review this resource, and I have to say that I am impressed.  I have worked with the school counselor on many occasions over the years, and this resource is one of the best I have seen.  It is perfect for preschool through around age eight.

I love the characters in the Activity Book.  There are eight different characters, and each one represents a step that students should take when it comes to bullying and keeping themselves safe.  I like the fact that the program gives kids a step-by-step approach because sometimes kids don't know exactly how to respond or what to do in a specific situation.

Because I am a music teacher, I know the power of teaching kids through music.  This is something I feel very strongly about, and this is something that makes learning fun for kids.  I have found that if you are teaching kids something and you add a song to it, their retention is much higher.  I think the addition of music makes this much more fun!

The cards are something that the kids can carry around with them for easy reference.  I think when you can take kids through a program and then give them something tangible to remind them of what they learned, they will retain the information a lot more.

So, if you are a parent, teacher, administrator, grandparent, or anyone who has a special child, this is a wonderful resource I would encourage you to get.  And right now, the  company is running a great deal.  Usually this resource is $11.99, but you can now get it for $9.99!  Certainly something to get right now before the price jumps back up!

And while you're checking out the site, be sure to like them on facebook and follow them on twitter.

I was sent a free product from the company in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Back to School Bonanza Giveaway Hop (Ends 8/15) U.S.

Welcome to the Back to School Bonanza organized by Moms Do It Better! This is a giveaway hop where all participants will have a giveaway with prizes to help you send your kids back to school! There is a grand prize of $150 {PayPal or Amazon Gift Card - Winners Choice} which may be entered here.

<!-- end InLinkz script –>
When you're done entering the giveaway here be sure to hop over to the others for even more prizes and chances to win!

Remember my review of the I See Me book?  The company has agreed to give one of my readers their very own I See Me pirate book just like I reviewed.  The company will work with the winner to personalize it the way he/she wants it.

In addition to this, I will be giving away one other fantastic product I got to review:  Eraselets!

That's right, these are fantastic bracelets that are fashionable, and they double as erasers!  I love the story of the founder.  He was a homeless youth living on the streets of Nashville, and he found God.  With the help of God and the help of a local charity organization, he has turned his life around.

In addition to his charity work, he has also invented these eraselets.  It all started when his daughter lost almost all her erasers, and he threatened to tie her erasers around her wrist.  Then he decided to make these bracelets that double as an eraser.  Now thee years later, these eraselets have sold more than two million!  And they are made in the USA!  That is something that not many school products can claim!

To find out more about their charity work, be sure to click on the following links:

My daughter loves to collect jewelry, not wear it, but that is not the case with these.  This picture shows her on the day these arrived in the mail, and she has worn this eraselet several times since.  Wonder if they can erase as well as they claim?  While they cannot erase absolutely everything, they work fairly well on erasing pencil.  You might have to work a little bit harder on dark pencil, but it certainly is a solution to a problem of "lost" erasers.  And they have quite a collection of designs.  We got the spring pack, but they have everything from animals to smiley faces to sports.

Eraselets is going to give one of my readers a 6-pack of eraselets and a beautiful jasper necklace!  So something for the child and something for the mom!  Not bad.

To enter the giveaway, all you need to do is enter the rafflecopter below by August 15 at 9:00 P.M. Pacific time.  And this is only open to U.S. readers.  When you are done entering, be sure to hop on to the other blogs for the chance to win more giveaways!

Back to School Blast (Ends 8/14) U.S. #BtBlast

back to school blast

Welcome to the Back To School Blast hosted by This Flourishing Life, Tailor Made Momma, and Generations Of Savings. This event features items for all of your back to school needs. Each blog participating is giving away a prize or prize pack with a minimum value of $25, and the hosts are giving away prize packs with a total value of $1000!

Grand Prize:
This Flourishing Life, Generations Of Savings, and Tailor Made Momma are all hosting the grand prizes on their blogs. They are featuring prizes totaling $1000 in back to school gear for all ages. Head on over to their sites to enter!

As far as I am concerned, nothing says back-to school like peanut butter.  I grew up loving peanut butter and jelly and peanut butter and honey sandwiches.  They were a staple of my diet.  And I cannot say that they still are not a part of diet.  I love peanut butter, but I have found myself drawn to the old-fashioned and all-natural peanut butters as of late.

I was quite privileged awhile back to win a giveaway of Krema peanut butter.  Any time I can win peanut butter, it is a good day.  I was pleased to see that the ingredients were simple: peanuts!  I was so impressed with this peanut butter that I decided to contact the company and tell them about it.  Therefore, I get to now bring this fantastic giveaway to my readers.

Krema is a company that was established back in 1898.  They only use the finest peanuts, and they still make  their peanut butter the old-fashioned way.  They are one of the oldest peanut butter companies in the U.S., and their customers are very loyal (myself included!).  I must try their almond and cashew butter next!

I was sent two kinds of Krema Peanut Butter and two kinds of Crazy Richard Peanut butter.
You can see them featured above. creamy and crunchy in both.  And I absolutely love them!  Crunchy peanut butter has always been a favorite of mine, but their creamy is pretty hard to beat as well.  I have never tasted a peanut butter that tastes so natural.  I love the fact they add no sugar or salt.  And this stuff does not need it.

I can imagine what you might be thinking.  If you know my weight loss journey at all (and what the health nuts say about peanuts and peanut butter), you may think I am crazy for eating peanut butter at all.  After all, it is high in calories and fat.  Guilty as charged.  Just because I said their peanut butter tastes good and has not sugar or salt does not mean you get to take a tablespoon and start eating it out of the container (not that I wouldn't!).  Peanut butter can be a healthy addition to your diet, but you have to make sure you limit your intake of this fabulous product.  At least if you eat this natural peanut butter, you are not putting additional sweeteners and other garbage that you do not need into your body.

When it comes to eating this fantastic peanut butter, I love it on graham crackers, English muffins, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I will even cook with it.  And just so you know, it is good for hiccups, too.  Not joking.  I heard on the O'Reilly Factor that if you get hiccups, take a spoonful of peanut butter.  I tried it with Krema Peanut butter, and it works!

Well, the good news is that two of my U.S. readers will get two jars of peanut butter.  All you will need to do is fill out the rafflecopter below by 9:00 P.M. Pacific time on August 14, and you are in to win.  And just to fill things up a bit, I will also give those lucky winners a book, CD, or DVD of their choice $10 or under.  This can be  for you, your child, or anyone.

Best of wishes, and when you are done entering my giveaway, please hop on to the other blogs in the linky so you have the chance to win even more giveaways!

Disclaimer: Please note that the Back To School Blast hosts and participating bloggers are not responsible for sponsors that do not fulfill their prize, but we will make every effort to help the winner in obtaining it.

Easy Lunchbox Giveaway (Ends 8/11) U.S.

packing school lunches, bento lunch boxes, waste-free

Easylunchboxes
was started by Kelly Lester, a Mother who wanted to provide her children with a healthy school lunch while on a budget. Her own struggles with weight control has inspired her to teach her children healthy eating habits. She is certainly one creative lady who has given lunch boxes of the past a makeover to help make every Mother feel better about what their child eats for lunch.

I will tell you honestly that these are fantastic, and I mean it!  I have used them--not my daughter.  I enjoy them.  I love the bento style.  I have this weird thing about keeping my food somewhat separated when possible.  This makes those easier.  And it's nice to only use one plastic container rather than three!

This Day in History July 3, 1839

Because I got confused and posted about July 2 today, I decided I had better rectify the situation by posting about what happened on this date in 1839.  This marks the date of the first "normal" school (public education) established in the U.S.  In Lexington, Massachusetts, Reverend Cyrus Pierce gathered together three female pupils, and thus, our public education system was born!

I find it ironic that this happened the date before July 4 (Independence Day) and in the middle of summer.  I can imagine it was hot, and people were thinking about July 4th even back then.  Imagine if this was declared a regular school day in this day and age--the kids and parents would be upset!

This Day in History October 21, 1966

A great tragedy happened on this day in 1966--one I had not ever heard about.  The small town of Aberfan in Wales experienced a terrible mudslide at 9:15 A.M.  To make it eerier, it was a Friday (so is today!). School had just begun at Pantglass Junior School.  The mudslide first destroyed a farm cottage (and killed all occupants).  The children were just returning from a morning assembly, and although the mudslide was seen and heard, no alarm could have been sounded--and it happened so fast, nothing could have been done anyway.

In total, half of the children (116) were killed, and five of their teachers were killed.  In total, 144 people were killed.  No one was rescued alive after 11 A.M. the morning of the disaster, and it took nearly a week to recover all the bodies.  When they recovered the body of the head deputy teacher, he was holding the bodies of five children in his arms.

Investigations were made concerning the cause of this horrible mudslide.  There had been heavy rain in the area, and mine workers noticed cracks in the tip.  But nothing more was done before the disaster to investigate.  The mudslide was 45 feet deep outside the school, and most of the school was completely engulfed.  It was finally determined after 5 months of inquiry that the tip had blocked the natural course of water down the hill, and pressure had built up thus causing the devastating mudslide.

I think what tugs at my heart is the stories of the survivors on the various sites I will list at the bottom of this post.  It is worth your going to the site and reading the eyewitness accounts.  And I suppose, that since I am a teacher, this really touches me. I realize that you never do know when it might be your last day on this earth.  I am certain that all of the people killed in this tragedy did not plan on that morning being their last on earth.  I can only hope and pray that they told their families that they loved them and did not leave this earth with unresolved bitterness or hatred in their hearts.

Progress Cards Back To School Sampler Pack Giveaway (Ends 9/3) U.S. Only (CLOSED)

 Sponsored by Tomoson.com
Did you read my Progress Cards Review I just posted?  Does it sound like something you may like to own?  Well, here is your chance to win exactly what I reviewed!  One person (U.S. only) will win their very own Back To School Sampler Pack of Progress Cards.  Be sure to enter on the rafflecopter form below and only write a comment on the post when asked to.  This giveaway will end on September 3 at 9:00 P.M. Pacific Time.  Best of wishes to all!

Twinkle Tuesday--Progress Cards Review--Back To School Sampler Pack

A short time ago, I was asked to review a fantastic product--Progress Cards.  I was sent a Back to School Sampler pack which included a Progress Report and 15 cards for children to track their progress in various areas.  When I discovered that it was developed by an elementary school teacher, I was instantly hooked!

I was most impressed by the Progress Book (which you can download for free here).  While my daughter has not had a chance to fill it out yet, I am planning to have her go through it next week as a way to get her thinking about school again.  She is preparing to enter the third grade, and I think it is high time for her to develop her own goals and track her progress without her teacher or her grandmother or me harping on her.  She is already a very self-driven child, but she does tend to get sidetracked easily, and this is the very thing to keep her on the straight and narrow.

As I looked through the Back To School Progress pack of Progress Cards (download a free sample of Friendship Skills and Study Skills here), several topics caught my interest.  My daughter constantly struggles with her bedtime routine, healthy meals, and homework routine.  Guess what?  These are three topics that are covered in the Progress Cards!  (Maybe that means my daughter isn't the only one who struggles with these??)  My daughter can use these to establish her routines and track her progress on her own.  It even has the simplest of things listed on the cards--Go to the bathroom.  If you knew my daughter, you would know why this is important.  Now I can't remember the last time she had an accident, but she does tend to wait until the last minute when it comes to going to the bathroom.

Whether your child attends public school, private school, or home school, I believe that this product is something I could recommend with no hesitation.  I feel it is important for my child to "own" her actions, and this is an organized way for her to do it.  And it makes my life simpler!  Yes, I forget things sometimes, but with these cards, my excuse is gone.  And so is hers!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
