Jake Merrill was raised by his
grandmother, Ruby, and her hilarious friends. After a suspicious death at the
retirement home where Ruby lives, she enlists Jake and Chanel, the beautiful
activities director, to help her find the killer.
But secrets Ruby has kept for
decades threaten her family and the man she’s always loved but could never
have. Chanel’s unstable ex-boyfriend, a presumably dead relative, and vicious
criminals add to the confusion. Time is running out as Jake, Chanel, and Ruby
desperately search for clues to solve the murders and fight to save those they
love.
Poison Me made me laugh out loud and thoroughly enjoy myself. I wish
I had a friend like Ruby! Snappy dialogue, romance, and a strong sense of
family made this book well worth reading.

Poison Me by Cami Checketts
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book has it all--romance, mystery, and fast-paced action. Cami Checketts has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Why> Because when I pick up one of her books, I am assured of a good, clean story that deals with current issues. And this book is no exception. This book dealt with the issue of elderly people, and I believe that what happens will be shocking to most readers (it was to me).
But this book has so much more. There are several story lines that involve gambling, love, and secrecy. In the end, all the stories combine in an amazing way, and the author will keep you guessing almost until the last page of the book. Prayer and God are definitely and integral part of the story as is morality.
Characterization is definitely a strength of this author. I loved Chanel from the beginning, and who couldn't love the residents of the retirement center? It took me a little while to warm up to Jake, but as time when on, I found myself quite intrigued by him. It was truly nice to read a story that venerates the elderly, especially since American society tends to see this group of people as unimportant. The author kept you in the dark about various characters until the right time, and I found myself incredibly intrigued by this writing technique.
The author is a master storyteller, and you can rest assured that the content of the book will be ultimately uplifting and engaging. Not everything in the book has a happily ever after theme, and there is enough reality that I believe most readers will be hooked--I certainly was! Whether you are 80 or 20 (most teens probably will not connect with this story, but it is certainly appropriate for them to read), this book can be equally enjoyed by all.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
