The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back by Sariah Wilson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Let me say that this is a typical, clean young adult read, and if you like happy endings with hearts and flowers, this is for you. I have to admit that the sweetness in the book--especially towards the end of the book--became a bit too much for me. I guess I am not .as fond of books where the characters meet their soul mates in high school, but I guess that is what happens when you get close to your 40's.
What I will say is that book is squeaky clean--no profanity nor sex--and I can't tell you how nice that is. Most young adult books have at least a smattering of these. Mattie and Ella are fine characters. I have to admit I never liked Jake, and I would never have kept pining after him as Mattie did. There are plenty of positive life messages in the book--stand up for yourself, don't give up on your dreams, believe the best about everyone. But I would have like to have seen a little more "grit" in the story. Way too happy for my tastes, but maybe that is because fairy tales are just that for me--fairy tales. Indeed a nice enough story, and I am sure my daughter would enjoy it in a few years.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
