This Day in History June 17, 1944

Did you know that on this date in 1944, the Republic of Iceland was formed?  I did not.  Actually, Iceland is a place I know very little about except that I have been told that Iceland is green and Greenland is covered in ice.  (I don't know for sure if that is true.)

Evidently, this June 17 was chosen because it was the birthday of  Jón Sigurðsson, leader of the Icelandic independence movement in the 1800's.  It is quite a national holiday now as the video above shows you.
