This Day in History April 9, 1865

Appomattox Court House

"The war is over, the rebels are our countrymen again."
    Ulysses S. Grant - At Appomattox Court House (9 April 1865)


It was on this date in 1865, that Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House.  When this occurred, the Union soldiers were beginning to celebrate.  It was Grant who put a stop to this with the quote above.
