Tournament of Chance by S.G. RogersMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
First of all, I am not a typical fantasy book reader. I have read several within the past year, and sometimes I really connect with them. This book has a lot going for it. History and fantasy combine to create a pretty dramatic, intriguing tale at times. I was horrified at the treatment of those trying to overthrow the unjust government. I actually wish there had been more historical elements.
I am very glad to report that this is a clean read with no profanity nor sex. This means that young adults can feel free to read this, and moms and grandmas can read it, too! The romance is great, and I really can't say it's sappy. In fact, I kind of like Dane. I'd almost consider going back in time if I could get a prince like him!
I love the strength of Heather in this novel. I know it is the trend for there to be strong female protagonists in novels, and indeed Heather is strong but still feminine. I can only hope that there were many women like her throughout history. The world may never know.
Thee time travel portion of the book took me a while to get into. Once I embraced it, I began to see comparisons to the ultimate time travel story (as far as I'm concerned), "Somewhere in Time." But the ending of the story was a bit of let-down. I was hoping for a "meatier" ending, but that's just me. I'm sure most of the true romantics out there will love the ending.
Although this book was not my absolute favorite, it is indeed one of the better fantasies I have read. I would definitely be willing to read more books by this author.
