Bent by H.B. Heinzer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
First of all, this is a typical romance. I can promise while the book is well-written, it is not earth-shattering nor high intensity. I would call this a sweet romance with some profanity issues (not too major, thankfully) and some sex scenes (that aren't too detailed). This would be a book for adults that are past the young adult stage but not into middle age yet. Both characters are divorced, and there are plenty of references to high school and growing up in a small town.
For most of the book, I was indeed charmed. Who couldn't love a small town and a resurgence of a high school romance. I didn't agree with the morals of the book, but I have read worse. I just wish that the author had given us more background on Julia's marriage and background. I felt that we knew a lot about Micah. Julia demands complete honesty of Micah, but it seems that she does not always demand the same thing from herself. But I guess that is human nature. We tend to pick on others' faults if we struggle with them, too.
The romance between Micah and Julia was hot and heavy at times, sometimes humorous, but other times it was downright unbelievable. I wish there had been a lot more raw emotion in the book. Sometimes it seems that things are too nice and sweet in book such as these, but sugary sweet happy endings sometimes don't sit right with me. Could there really be a Micah? Caleb was probably my favorite and best-developed character, and I wish he had been a bigger part of the story.
In short, this is a simple romance that will only take you a day or so to read, and it is perfect for a light reading. And you'll feel warm and fuzzy after reading it, so I would say the author accomplished her purpose.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
