First Frost by Liz DeJesus
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
First of all, I am not a lover of the fantasy genre, but I have read several over the past year. I have learned to looked at the quality of the writing, the characterization, and the sequence of the story. If I happen to enjoy the book, that is always a bonus. In addition to this, I have discovered that the majority of fantasy books are geared towards young adults.
There were some very clever portions to this story. I have to admit that I do enjoy stories that combine fairy tales and enforce the fact that they are based on truth. Bianca Frost was an interesting character, and the inclusion of Ming added some diversity to the cast. I liked the idea of the museum, and of course, it was interesting to see how certain elements of the story would be explained.
I have to say I felt that many portions of the story followed similar paths that I had read before. I also found the love story way too sweet. I never really sensed a lot of danger, and I did start to lose interest. Again, this is probably due to disinterest in fantasy novels as a whole, but it did not capture my attention like I hoped it would.
One other thing did bother me. When a book is a young adult book, I think that profanity should be nonexistent or at least to a definite minimum. This book had too much profanity, and it was completely unnecessary. Those kinds of things do bother me, but that is a personal preference.
If you do like fantasy novels and fairy tales, this may be a quick read for you.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
