This Day in History February 6, 1840

Time to celebrate a momentous day for New Zealand! The treaty of Waitangi was signed on this date in 1840, and it officially made New Zealand part of the British empire.  It was very important for the indigenous people of this nation because they were guaranteed the same rights as British citizens.  This day in New Zealand is a time for these people (the Maori) to have all sorts of celebrations.  Also on this day, it is a time for the Order of New Zealand to be bestowed upon those individuals who have served their country in amazing ways.  Today's holiday is called Waitangi Day!
