This Day in History February 1, 1974

I know I don't usually post something as grim for today's feature, but when I saw this story, I knew I needed to for two reasons.  First of all, it is a story that originated not only in my state but in my hometown.  Secondly, it happened the year of my birth (I was not born yet!).

On this date in 1974, Ted Bundy entered the ranks of serial killer as yet another victim was claimed.  This was when his second victim was killed, and of course, many more follower.  He was captured April 27, 1979, and he was easily one of the more recent, notorious serial killers.

I remember the day he finally met his end in the electric chair on January 24 1989 after confessing to 36 murders.  It is indeed a horrendous moment, and I was in high school at the time of his execution.

The reason that this kind of haunts me is that he and I shared an alma mater.  I graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Tacoma, Washington. I actually had a teacher that year who remembered him walking the halls of Wilson.  It is kind of eerie to realize that you went to the same high school as a serial killer.  Granted, he graduated before I was born, but it doesn't mean it is not strange.

I remember the pageantry surrounding his execution.  People were making jokes and cheering.  Yes, I am glad that he can no longer prey on helpless women, but that does not mean I would ever cheer on his death.  Don't get me wrong.  I personally believe in the death penalty, and I am not even saying that I disagree with his penalty.  However, I think that making a spectacle of an execution is always wrong.

I have blogged about Tropical Traditions in the past, and you know that I have always liked their products.  This is their glass and surface cleaner, and I couldn't be happier with it!  I like that it has no ammonia nor any harsh chemicals in it.  You don't need to do any rinsing, and there is no fragrance added.  It cleans really well.  While I have not tried it on my computer screen yet, but it is supposed to work for that really well.  I plan to try it when I get a chance.  My mom also used it, and it cleaned well without streaking.  I highly recommend it.
So your loved ones will get a chance to use this around the house as a fantastic Valentine's Day present for you!  (okay, so I'm dreaming, I know--you will probably be the one using it!)  Not to worry, in addition to this product, I will be adding in all sorts of prizes for you.  I can tell you that there will be an Eden Fantasys gift certificate (not sure of the amount yet), stuffed animals, candy, and even essential items for your intimate times with your husband (yes, I have a large container of ONE you-know-what that I won and have not used, and I figured I would pass them on to someone who could use them).

This Day in History January 31, 1957

I was pleased to find this since my daughter is quite a swimmer (although I do not expect her to go the Olympics!)  On this date in 1957, Shirley Babashoff was born.  Don't know who she was?  Nor did I until this evening.  Read on, and you will be enlightened!

First of all, she was the only woman to compete as a member of the Golden West College Men's Swim Team, and she was faster than all of them!  I like her already.

She didn't stop there, however.  She went on to the Olympics, and it was in 1976 in Montreal that she won three silver medals and one gold medal in swimming.  She also won two silvers and one gold in the 1972 Olympics, but it was the 1976 one where she overcame the odds, namely the East German swimmers.

I find it interesting that from what I can see, she never received an individual gold medal--it was always a team event.  And yet she is still regarded as one of the greatest swimmers.

Here are the links to more information about her:

Disney's The Secret World of Arietty Trailer and Coloring Sheets

I had not heard about this new Disney film coming out called The Secret World of Arietty. It comes out February 17, and once I got this e-mail announcing it, I called my daughter over, and she watched the trailer and loved it!

To be perfectly honest, I was somewhat enraptured myself.  It look like something a little different.  I can remember hearing about The Borrowers in the past, but I have only just heard of it before.  I am already thinking this is a must-see for us.

THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY
DISNEY

Genre:                                      Animation/Adventure
Rating:                                      TBD
Release Date:                           February 17, 2012

Voice Cast:                               Bridgit Mendler, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, David Henrie, Moises Arias
Director:                                   Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Producer:                                  Toshio Suzuki
Screenplay by :                         Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa
Based on “The Borrowers” by:    Mary Norton
Director – English Language
Version:                                    Gary Rydstrom
Executive Producers –
English Language Version:        Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall
English Language Screenplay by:      Karey Kirkpatrick

Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered, where the smallest may stand tallest of all.  From the legendary Studio Ghibli (“Spirited Away,” “Ponyo”) comes “The Secret World of Arrietty,” an animated adventure based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.”

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts. But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom. The film hits theaters Feb. 17, 2012.

Notes:
  • Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most influential and admired filmmakers working in animation today and is a major figure in the Japanese cinematic landscape. His films have inspired moviegoers and colleagues around the world, from Pixar's John Lasseter to fantasist Guillermo del Toro to Chinese director Tsui Hark, and consistently top the box office in his native Japan.
  • Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, a top animator at Studio Ghibli, was responsible for the animation in a signature scene in “Ponyo,” in which Ponyo runs atop ocean waves.
  • English language voice talent director Gary Rydstrom is a seven-time Academy AwardÃ’ winning sound designer/mixer (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”). He joined Pixar Animation Studios as an animation film director in 2003.  His directorial debut for the studio was the Academy Award®-nominated short film “Lifted,” and he directed the short film “Hawaiian Vacation,” which was released with “Cars 2” in June 2011.
  • Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are highly successful producing partners whose films, separately and together, include “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “E.T.,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” the Indiana Jones films and the Jurassic Park films. In total, Kennedy and Marshall have earned 11 Oscar® nominations.
  • English language screenplay writer Karey Kilpatrick’s credits include “Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Over the Hedge,” which he also directed (with Tim Johnson).

And now for a special treat for my readers.  If you follow this link, you will find an attachment file I was sent that contains printable coloring pages and a word search from the film.  You will find a PDF file that seems to work well. I'm going to leave them as is.  If you have trouble downloading and/or printing them, let me know, and I will try to make changes.  This is the first time I have ever attached files to a blog post, and so hopefully this will work like the tutorial I read said it would.

Enjoy!

This Day in History January 30, 1905

This day's story introduced me to a great new site:  Officer Down Memorial Page.  If seems to be quite an exhaustive list of officers who have been killed or have died in the line of duty.  This is the only page where I got my information today, but I would say it is a good enough site to stand on its own.

On this date in 1905, Patrolman John Eagan died from injuries he had received while doing his job.  He was in a horse-drawn patrol wagon on its way to pick up a drunk man.  In Manhattan, a car frightened the horses, and the wagon raced down the road, swinging from side to side.  The driver was unable to gain control of the wagon, and unfortunately Eagan, who was on the step of the wagon, was thrown off the wagon.  He suffered skull fracture and lacerated hands.

He was rushed to the Harlem Hospital, and they attempted to treat him.  He received lockjaw from one of his hand wounds.  He then was moved to St. Luke's Hospital where they removed a portion of his infected hand.  His condition worsened, and three days later, he died.  He had been with the agency 25 years.

I don't know about you, but it seems that every time you turn around, you hear of another officer being killed in the line of duty.  As far as I am concerned, I view police officers, military personnel, firefighters, etc. in the same way.  These are public servants who daily put their lives on the line for my welfare and that of my family members and this wonderful country in which I am privileged to live.  They deserve all the respect and thanks I can give them.  There might be a bad apple in the bunch every once in a while, but the vast majority are decent men and women who care about their jobs and keeping their communities safe.

Reading Challenge Updates--January

As promised, I am doing a monthly reading challenge wrap-up post.  This is for the month of January.

For this challenge, I am supposed to read one book each month for fun.  I actually read two, but the one I chose to count for the challenge was
Rule's Bride by Kat Martin

I already posted in the goodreads group, so I am done for the month.

Let's see, did I read any books for this Challenge?  Yes, I did!  I am so glad to report that I read the following books for the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge:

Rule's Bride by Kat Martin
The Bone House by Stephen Lawhead
The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck by Kathleen Y'Barbo

And then onto the e-book challenge.

The Bone House by Stephen Lawhead
The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck by Kathleen Y'Barbo
The Thinking Man, Paralysis by Analysis by Nadina Boun
Anasazi Intrigue by Linda Weaver Clarke
Sinful by Kacey Hammell

And one more challenge.  A lot of overlapping, as you can see!

The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck by Kathleen Y'Barbo

Anasazi Intrigue by Linda Weaver Clarke
Sinful by Kacey Hammell

Rule's Bride by Kat Martin

My favorite book this month was not even a part of any challenges:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

My least favorite book was:

The Bone House by Stephen Lawhead

I set a goal to read 50 books this year, and I have already read 11--haven't reviewed them all yet.  Goodreads shows me at 12 because my daughter's reviews are under my account as well.  I feel like I am off to a good start.

Menu Plan Monday--4-Ingredient Cookbook Week (1/30-2/4)

This week I am back to an old standard.  I love the 4-Ingredient Cookbook.

This is one of those cookbooks that I got long ago, and it one of those cookbooks I pull out for good, easy, usually cheap recipes.  So this week, here are my recipes.

Meal 1:  Cheese-Stuffed Meat Loaf p. 44
              Veggies
              Bread

Meal 2:  Onion-Baked Pork Chops p. 56
              Veggies
              Potatoes

Meal 3:  Peachy Pork Roast p. 60
             Potaotes/Veggies

Meal 4:  Curried Chicken with Couscous p. 148
              Veggies

Very simple, I know.  But easy.  Let's hope the power doesn't go out again.  It went out twice in the past three days!  Thankfully it was not off long either time.

Bacon Salt Review--My New Seasoning of Choice

I was so happy that I had the opportunity to review J&D's Original Bacon Salt.  I am always one who is looking for new seasonings to try, and it is an added bonus if it is low sodium, zero calorie, and zero fat.  The fact it is vegetarian and kosher is not overly important to me.

On first try, I was amazed at how good the flavor was.  The bacon and hickory flavors are wonderful, and it has quickly become my favorite seasoning.  I find myself putting it on everything I make--no, not dessert yet, but you never know!  It has taken the place of salt for me, and I know this will be something that I must keep on hand.

This is the perfect seasoning for those of us who watch our calories.  I love to put bacon with vegetables--especially green beans and bacon.  This bacon salt can keep you from adding all those extra calories and fat that bacon adds to dishes.  I don't even find myself reaching for butter to put on my veggies as much.

So if you would  like a seasoning to put on your vegetables, your meats, your side dishes, and more, check out bacon salt.  You will not regret it!
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

This Day in History January 29, 1959

After yesterday's tragic story, I knew I needed something happy.  And I found it.  On this date in 1959, Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Fox Wilshire Theater in Los Angeles.  I always found this one of the animated films that was somewhat unusual.  I loved that the score was Tchaikovsky's score for his ballet by the same name.

This was the sixteenth of the animated features released by Disney, and it was the last (while he was alive) to be based upon a fairy tale.  It was also the last to be inked by hand.  And it was the first animated film to be filmed in Super Technirama 70.  This film took almost the entire decade to make.  (Wow!)  During the filming of this, each shot of the film was modeled by actors for the benefit of the animators.  (And here I thought they only did that in the computer age!)

When this film was released, it was essentially a flop.  It almost bankrupted the studio, only recouping half of the filming costs.  I can understand the criticisms of its being too slow and having little character development.  This is not one of those films that I generally watch over and over again.  It is also very dark.  I always found that the scene towards the end where Aurora's prince comes to rescue her is quite frightening.

Solution Sunday--January 3 in 30 Challenge (wrapping it up this month!)

This will serve as my wrap-up post for my 3 in 30 challenge this month--January.

Looking back at my goals, I think I did the best I could in spite of an unexpected power outage that lasted nearly five days (that is why I did not link up last week).

1.  I did not get down to 145 pounds, but I concentrated on my abs, healthy meals from my pantry, and reducing my evening snack.  Not too bad, all things considered.  Just no change in my weight.

2.  My closet is cleaned out.  It is the only real part of my room that is clean.  Tonight, one of our cats was playing amongst my debris. But at least I accomplished what I wanted.

3.  I cleaned out on folder of my e-mail inbox!  Not too bad, considering.

Now on to February's goals:

1.  No more concentrating on weight loss.  For years, I have been trying to lose the last 10-15 pounds.  So I decided that I would concentrate on:

  • Eat 3 veggies, 2 fruits per day.
  • Exercise 3-4 times per week.
  • Mission Abs!
2.  Clean out the "junk" area of my room.  Right in front of my dressers, there is more junk than I care to mention.  My goal for this week is to get at least the area in front of my first dresser cleared out.

3.  Clean out my e-mail inbox.  I plan to clean out at least one more folder.  We'll see.

I realize it is essentially the same goals, but it is taking them to the next level.

Here's hoping all will continue to go well!

This Day in History January 28, 1986

I don't think I will ever forget this day.  I remember where I was.  I was home sick on this date.  The TV was on, and suddenly, the program was interrupted, and this is what I saw.

Yes, it was on this date in 1986 that the Challenger broke apart just 73 seconds after lift-off.  This was that fateful mission where the first educator astronaut was chosen.  The cause of the accident was a failed O-ring. I remember how the Space Shuttle program stopped for some time--almost three years.

What I didn't realize is that some of the astronauts evidently survived the initial explosion, but of course, none survived the cabin's hitting the Atlantic Ocean.  I cannot imagine how horrible that would have been.  There was no escape plan.  And it is even worse to realize that this fatal flaw was known about since the 1970's.

I will never forget this date.  I remember getting up and calling out to my mom who was hanging out laundry or something like that.  And sadly, it was not the last Space Shuttle disaster.

This Day in History January 27, 1302

This is Dante Alighieri (born May 1265) was a medieval Florentine poet who is probably known mostly for The Divine Comedy.  He wrote his poetry in the Italian vernacular rather than Latin--a novel idea back then.    His adoration of "Beatrice" also figures prominently into his poetry.

It was on this date in 1302 that Dante had something pretty serious happen.  There was much turmoil in his beloved Italy, and he was deeply involved in politics.  The Black Guelfs took over Rome (his beloved White Guelfs had been in power previously). He was called to appear before this new government, and he chose not to.  As a result, they accused him of crimes he did not commit.  They exiled him, and when he refused to appear before them again (in March), they sentenced him to be burned to death should he ever return to Florence.

While in exile, he wrote The Divine Comedy.  He was invivted to return to Florence in 1316, but the terms were those that were often used for pardoned criminals.  He refused and never returned to his beloved Florence.  He died in exile in the fall of 1321.

I will admit that I have never in my life read any of his works.  Maybe I perused them one time in school, but nothing ever stuck with me.  I know of him, but I have yet to read his works.  I probably should, but I will admit I probably never will.

Mom Bloggers for Social Good Action Campaign--Malaria No More’s "Dream Big for Africa" Campaign

Last week, Malaria No More launched their "Dream Big for Africa" campaign.  All you need to do to join in is to text DREAM to 85944.  This will automatically donate $10 to Malaria No More and enter you to win a trip to Africa with former American Idol runner-up Katherin McPhee.

Sample tweet (help us spread the word)

Text DREAM to 85944 to donate $10 to @MalariaNoMore and be entered to win a trip to Africa with @NBCSmash star @katharinemcphee. #socialgoodmoms

Now if you are like me, you would like to know a little bit more about this campaign.  So read on.

The statistics are staggering.  Malaria kills one child per minute.  It robs children of their dreams more than any other disease.  I had no idea it was so bad over there.  Did you?  The goal of Malaria No More is to end these senseless deaths by 2015.  As we know, this is a very treatable, preventable disease.

This is a big job, and Malaria No More needs your help.  From now until February 16, every time you text DREAM to 85944, the $10 donation goes to Malaria No More, and you are entered to win that fabulous trip.  While in Africa, the winner and McPhee will deliver much-needed malaria prevention tools.  (In case you are not cell phone savvy, what happens is $10 is added to your cell phone bill.  I have donated this way before, and it is awesome!  Please note that message and data charges may apply.)

Within 24 hours of sending this donation, you will receive a follow-up message via text with a link to an online form where you will enter your contact information and your one-sentence dream for Africa.  On February 24, 10 finalists will be notified and asked to submit a 300-word blog post and 30-second video on why you think you are the best person for this African trip.  The best blog post and video will be named on February 26.  And that is how the winner will be selected!

You do not have a whole lot of time, so enter now.  For more information about this promotion, click here.  Even if you are a not a blogger, just donate the money, and you will be making a difference in the life of a child--probably several children!

This Day in History January 27, 1956

Today's feature is so fun for me because this was one of my favorite Danny Kaye films as I was growing up.  Yes, indeed, on this date in 1956, The Court Jester starring Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury, and Basil Rathbone opened in movie theaters.

I found it interesting that when this was made back in 1955, it cost about $4 million which made it the most expensive comedy film made to date.  I was amazed to learn that it bombed at the box office--only brought in 2.2 million.

So why does this musical hold a special place in my heart?  Well, I became a Danny Kaye fan as a result of watching White Christmas.  I read a biography about him.  I think I have actually read two biographies.  I know there are lots of rumors out there about him, and I know that he was not always the nicest of guys.  But  no one can deny that he was one talented guy.  This movie was the first time I ever saw him doing what he does best.  His talent is one that was very unusual.

Thoughtful Thursday--The Thinking Man, Paralysis by Analysis by Nadina Boun Book Review

Summary from goodreads:  The thinking man is a compilation of rules in a man's head, a comic analysis based on the depiction of the cycles of life and the ever growing need for humor in our daily human conduct. The author, Nadina Boun, invites you on a humoristic journey, of self discovery, by merely looking at what is already there.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Are you ready to read something a little different from the usual?  This is a book you definitely will want to peruse.  It is a short book (I read it in an hour), and it is written in Olde English.  These may be stumbling blocks for some of you, but I found these some of the great strengths in this book.

This book is told from the perspective of a king (occasionally a queen and/or queen mother) who is living during the times of the Old English monarchy.  He tries to come up with steadfast rules to solve a variety of issues within his life.  Those issues mainly center around women, dating, and relationships.  Those of us who enjoy this time period in history can envision a king doing exactly what this "thinking man" did.

I found this book well-written and full of humor.  I loved it when the king continued to go to his mother for advice.  And her advice was quite entertaining--she created rules as well.  I would venture to say that there are men and women out there today who still subconsciously (or consciously) do this very same thing.

I did have a few complaints, but they were basically minor.  I wished the book had been at least another 50 pages.  I was just beginning to enjoy the characters, and then it was over.  I would have liked to see the thinking man in even more diverse circumstances.  I understood why the author added illustrations, but I would have preferred less or none at all.  I found most of the illustrations distracting and somewhat inappropriate at times.  Though sex was handled discreetly and no foul language was used, I would have preferred seeing this king learn from his mistakes and devote himself fully to his queen.  Morals did not seem to be at the forefront of the thinking man's mind.  I realize this was probably realistic given the position of the thinking man, but there were some moral kings who did exist.

In short, this is a nice quick read that I found very entertaining.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

About the Author

My name is Nadina Boun, I am known by my friends as little Shakespeare, but I prefer my own description of  “I am the rebel, the lonesome warrior and the butterfly. I am forever changing, always learning and adopting new ideas.”
Mission:
I am currently on a mission
to reveal what I’ve been given,
in poetry, prose and thoughts,
in analysis, satire and quotes.
A little thought by me
“I am no Shakespeare
but in thy language I speak
of men, love and dreams,
of sense and mysteries,
and thy cloak may be thick
yet still thou will feel
thus why deny me the words
which so of’t thou hast seen.
Everything I write,
has been before me written,
I speak of nothing new.” Nadina Boun
Influences
I am very much influenced as well as inspired by the 17th and 18th century French authors and playwrights such as Racine, Corneille, Moliere, as well as LaFontaine, Rousseau and Beaudelaire.
My all time favorite is however, needless to say, the master; Shakespeare.
