This Day in History January 27, 1956

Today's feature is so fun for me because this was one of my favorite Danny Kaye films as I was growing up.  Yes, indeed, on this date in 1956, The Court Jester starring Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury, and Basil Rathbone opened in movie theaters.

I found it interesting that when this was made back in 1955, it cost about $4 million which made it the most expensive comedy film made to date.  I was amazed to learn that it bombed at the box office--only brought in 2.2 million.

So why does this musical hold a special place in my heart?  Well, I became a Danny Kaye fan as a result of watching White Christmas.  I read a biography about him.  I think I have actually read two biographies.  I know there are lots of rumors out there about him, and I know that he was not always the nicest of guys.  But  no one can deny that he was one talented guy.  This movie was the first time I ever saw him doing what he does best.  His talent is one that was very unusual.

  2. I also love this movie and White Christmas. I love his comedy roles and personality in his acting and he has always made me laugh. I have shown these movies to my daughters and they, too, have learned to love his acting. I don't know much about him, just the fun movies I seen.

    1. I have yet to show this movie to my daughter, but I know she will like it.

There are so many rumors about his life, that it is hard to know what is rumor and what is fact. He did seem to be somewhat of a womanizer in his early years. And he wasn't always the easiest person to work with from what I understand. But are geniuses like him ever easy to work with?

  5. THE COURT JESTER!? Ah! What a coincidence finding this treasure on your blog. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I just recorded it from tv the other day. I'm a fan of Basil Rathbone, so I follow all his movies, and I get "acquainted" with many other old-time actors along the way. Now I'm more excited than ever to watch this movie!

    1. It is definitely a good movie. Basil Rathbone does not play his "usual" role. He actually does some comedy--which is interesting.
