It was a struggle to find verified information for today, but I finally found one!  On this date in 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament in which he set aside the majority of estate to establish the Nobel Prizes.  These were annual awards, and he left about 4 million U.S. dollars (it would be closer to $100 million in today's dollars).  He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on December 10, 1896.
