This Day in History February 1, 1974

I know I don't usually post something as grim for today's feature, but when I saw this story, I knew I needed to for two reasons.  First of all, it is a story that originated not only in my state but in my hometown.  Secondly, it happened the year of my birth (I was not born yet!).

On this date in 1974, Ted Bundy entered the ranks of serial killer as yet another victim was claimed.  This was when his second victim was killed, and of course, many more follower.  He was captured April 27, 1979, and he was easily one of the more recent, notorious serial killers.

I remember the day he finally met his end in the electric chair on January 24 1989 after confessing to 36 murders.  It is indeed a horrendous moment, and I was in high school at the time of his execution.

The reason that this kind of haunts me is that he and I shared an alma mater.  I graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Tacoma, Washington. I actually had a teacher that year who remembered him walking the halls of Wilson.  It is kind of eerie to realize that you went to the same high school as a serial killer.  Granted, he graduated before I was born, but it doesn't mean it is not strange.

I remember the pageantry surrounding his execution.  People were making jokes and cheering.  Yes, I am glad that he can no longer prey on helpless women, but that does not mean I would ever cheer on his death.  Don't get me wrong.  I personally believe in the death penalty, and I am not even saying that I disagree with his penalty.  However, I think that making a spectacle of an execution is always wrong.

  1. Interesting story. Thanks for bringing that to us. My first degree is in criminal justice, and I had an interest in serial killers. I know... long stretch from that to teaching. It would definitely be strange to realize a serial killer may have sat in the same classroom as you.

    1. Yes, it was. Even as I told my friend about it a couple days ago, it did seem really eerie.

Criminal justice--my only experience was a mock trial in high school, and it was fun but quite challenging!
