This Day in History January 15, ????

I realize that this is not the normal "this day in history" post, but I really thought this would be kind of fun.  This day is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day.  And I am not joking.  In spite of the weather, every January 15th, you can celebrate this "holiday."

When I began to research it, it would appear that no one knows when or even why this particular date was established.  You can find references to strawberry ice cream in the Neapolitan-style ice cream dessert (which features 3 flavors).  The earliest documented use of strawberry ice cream appears to be in 1744.  Evidently, Maryland governor Thomas Bladen served it to impress dignitaries and other guests.

Now, for my money, I would go get some ice cream at Stone Cold Creamery or even to our local Tim's Pharmacy in honor of this holiday.  Some people would prefer to make their own.  In the links below, you will find links to strawberry ice cream recipes amongst other things.

By the way, if you do have strawberry ice cream, make sure you get real strawberry ice cream, not strawberry-flavored.  You want real strawberries in it!

  1. You know, I rarely get strawberry icecream, though it's my husband's favorite. But I must say, anything strawberry is good to me!
