Thoughtful Thursday--The Thinking Man, Paralysis by Analysis by Nadina Boun Book Review

Summary from goodreads:  The thinking man is a compilation of rules in a man's head, a comic analysis based on the depiction of the cycles of life and the ever growing need for humor in our daily human conduct. The author, Nadina Boun, invites you on a humoristic journey, of self discovery, by merely looking at what is already there.

Are you ready to read something a little different from the usual?  This is a book you definitely will want to peruse.  It is a short book (I read it in an hour), and it is written in Olde English.  These may be stumbling blocks for some of you, but I found these some of the great strengths in this book.

This book is told from the perspective of a king (occasionally a queen and/or queen mother) who is living during the times of the Old English monarchy.  He tries to come up with steadfast rules to solve a variety of issues within his life.  Those issues mainly center around women, dating, and relationships.  Those of us who enjoy this time period in history can envision a king doing exactly what this "thinking man" did.

I found this book well-written and full of humor.  I loved it when the king continued to go to his mother for advice.  And her advice was quite entertaining--she created rules as well.  I would venture to say that there are men and women out there today who still subconsciously (or consciously) do this very same thing.

I did have a few complaints, but they were basically minor.  I wished the book had been at least another 50 pages.  I was just beginning to enjoy the characters, and then it was over.  I would have liked to see the thinking man in even more diverse circumstances.  I understood why the author added illustrations, but I would have preferred less or none at all.  I found most of the illustrations distracting and somewhat inappropriate at times.  Though sex was handled discreetly and no foul language was used, I would have preferred seeing this king learn from his mistakes and devote himself fully to his queen.  Morals did not seem to be at the forefront of the thinking man's mind.  I realize this was probably realistic given the position of the thinking man, but there were some moral kings who did exist.

In short, this is a nice quick read that I found very entertaining.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

About the Author

My name is Nadina Boun, I am known by my friends as little Shakespeare, but I prefer my own description of  “I am the rebel, the lonesome warrior and the butterfly. I am forever changing, always learning and adopting new ideas.”
Mission:
I am currently on a mission
to reveal what I’ve been given,
in poetry, prose and thoughts,
in analysis, satire and quotes.
A little thought by me
“I am no Shakespeare
but in thy language I speak
of men, love and dreams,
of sense and mysteries,
and thy cloak may be thick
yet still thou will feel
thus why deny me the words
which so of’t thou hast seen.
Everything I write,
has been before me written,
I speak of nothing new.” Nadina Boun
Influences
I am very much influenced as well as inspired by the 17th and 18th century French authors and playwrights such as Racine, Corneille, Moliere, as well as LaFontaine, Rousseau and Beaudelaire.
My all time favorite is however, needless to say, the master; Shakespeare.
