This Day in History April 7, 1860

As I prepare to eat my breakfast, I find today's feature quite appropriate.  It was on this date in 1860 that Will Keith Kellogg was born.  He and his brother John worked to develop the first cornflakes (and idea that was "stolen" by Post as he created his own cereal company).  This angered Kellogg (his brother had showed off their invention and how they went about it, so what did he expect?), so he went on to found the Battle Creek Toasted Flake Corn Company in 1906.  It was one of the first companies to provide nutrition labels and prizes for children.  This was the company that later took his last name.

He was very charitable and even someone ill at ease about his wealth.  He worked hard during the Depression to provide an abundance of jobs for workers.  He also had a love for Arabian horses.  In 1925, he purchased 377 acres in California for an Arabian horse ranch.  As this ranch began to grow, it was eventually donated to the university and then to the state and so on.

He died at the age of 91 October 6, 1951 from heart failure.
