This Day in History August 14, 1784

See the little island in red?  That is Kodiak Island, and it was on this date in 1784 that it became the site of the first permanent Russian establishment of Alaska, thus beginning the colonization of Russia.  Three Saints Bay Colony was the name of this settlement, and it was founded by Russian fur trader Grigory Shelikhov.  He grew tired of being harassed by the natives, so he killed many and imprisoned others.  This guaranteed the success of this Russian colony.

Alaska is one of the most beautiful places in our country, and this is just one of the many views from Kodiak Island.  This fantastic island is the 80th largest island in the world and the 2nd largest in North America.  It is 3600 square feet, and it contains much forest and its share of barren land.
