This Day in History April 9, 1865

I had not realized until I was preparing for this post that this is the anniversary of the end of the Civil War.  It was on this date in 1865 that General Lee surrendered to General Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse.  I don't think there is much to write about this except that Lee truly had no choice but to do this.  His army was starving and definitely defeated.  And it drew to an end a very sad time in our history when brother rose up against brother.  It also is amazing sometimes when I stop and think that the North did win.  It was the South who was well-trained for battle.  They were smaller in numbers, but much better fighters.  Had England been able to aid them or had they been able to get more resources and fighters, the battle outcome may not have been so decisive.
