Forever In Carolina by Nicholas A. White
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I have to admit that I was completely immersed in the story from the very beginning of this unusual book. I knew I had to read this book to find out how the book ended. And for the first half of the book, I was greatly intrigued. The writing was fast-paced and easy to read. Most of the story is told through a flashback to the high school years of the main characters.
I have to admit that I did lose interest in this book, but I honestly don't fault the author for that. I struggled to follow the characters, and I didn't really connect with any of the characters. And there were portions of the book that were really strange. In fact, at times the writing style reminded me of William Faulkner (and that should be a definite compliment to the author). And I suppose that since no female character really captured my attention, my interest waned to a degree. But it was reignited at the end of the book. However, the epilogue left me with more questions than answers.
There are no sex scenes in the book, and that is a big plus. There is profanity, but it is rather sparse. Football does not really interest me, so I suppose that was another strike for me. But understand that all I am saying is personal preference.
There are some definite strengths I would like to point out. I love the fact that the 20 percent of the profits from the book are going to cancer research--I couldn't be happier about that! And another strength is that the book is realistic. Bad things happen, and there is no sappy romance in this book. I also think that the author brings to light a juvenile disease that can kill athletes. I have only barely heard of this disease, but I think I have a better understanding of it now.
So, if you want to read a book that is different from the typical, run-of-the-mill romance/young adult book, I would suggest this book to you. It just may resonate with you!
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated in any way, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
