Homemade Dog Food--You Do Have the Option!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of homemadedogfood.com for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

If you are like me, you only want the best for your pets.  We only have one dog, but finding the right food has been a struggle.  Either she does not like the food, or the food does not like her.  She tends to have a sensitive stomach, and it can sometimes be a challenge to get her to eat.

Homemade dog food

I have to admit I have never thought much about homemade dog food.  It always seems like it is so much more trouble than it is worth.  Do I really have the time do it?  Are the ingredients difficult to find?  And will my dog actually eat it?

I think you can see from the video that making your own dog food at home is easier than you think.  Ground beef, rice, and eggs are ingredients that just about everyone has access to and can find easily.  The video demonstrates that it is almost like making mealoaves.  You can also see how excitedly his dogs eat the food once it is made!

I will admit to finding it strange that you put the entire egg in the blender, egg shell and all.  Evidently, this is something that the maker of the video anticipates because he shows that egg shells are ground so well that it is clear that your dog will not struggle to eat them.  And after all, what do I know?  I am not a dog!  I will admit that not having to crack the eggs does make the recipe easier.

This post comes at a very timely moment for me.  It was only yesterday that we discovered that our dog's high quality food was amongst the big recall of dog food.  It may be tainted with salmonella.  We wouldn't have been overly concerned, but we had noticed her bouts of diarrhea and vomiting the day before.  We did take her to the vet, and thankfully, there is no cause for concern since she no longer appears to be sick.  We just have to watch her closely the next few days.

I have to admit that it does make me think.  Yes, ground beef is sometimes recalled--that is true.  Anything can be tainted with bacteria.  But doesn't it make you feel better when you know exactly what you are putting into your dog's belly?  Have you looked at the ingredients in your dog's food lately?  And what about the cost of the dog food?  If you want to feed your dog the good stuff, you will pay a lot more for it.  Imagine only using three ingredients and only having to add dog supplements to it.  While it may mean that you will have to invest some time in your dog, won't the outcome be worth it?

Easy cooked dog food recipe

When I get some time this summer (things are a little busy this summer), I am seriously considering giving this a try.  And I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject as well.  Let me know what you think, and if you do try the recipe, be sure to let me know how it turns out and what your dog thinks about it!

  1. Interesting! I've been interested in making my own dog food for a while now, but admit that I am too nervous. I am not entirely convinced that food good for human consumption = food good for dog consumption. However, we did once take our dog (now deceased) in for behavior analysis and the trainer (great man - also now deceased) advised us to give our dog yogurt and bananas and it was amazing the transformation in our dog's behavior! I would NEVER have thought that.

Anyway, all that to say, we still have two dogs and I would love to not have to buy dog food and to just be able to make it ourselves. I think though before I try anything I'd like to run it by our vet.

But, yes, I would (and at some point will) make our own dog food.
