How many times have you turned on the TV when your kids are around and noticed there was nothing family-friendly on? Even the advertisements make you blush nowadays! It was just the other day that I asked my mom when a certain inappropriate word became "all right" to be said on TV without being "bleeped.".
As a mom and a teacher, I see how this drift from family-friendly entertainment has changed everything. I cannot believe the language and stories I hear from middle school and high school students. And the students don't even mind that I am in the room. And my daughter comes home from third grade saying things and talking about things I haven't taught her. She came home just the other week and explained the definition of "gay" to my mom! I had explained a little about this form of lifestyle, but I had not explained that word to her. I shouldn't continue to be shocked, but I guess it is so different from the world in which I grew up.
I was so excited to learn that AmFam has a website devoted to family friendly comedy performed by leading comedians! I went to their link, and I was completely enraptured by the stories the comedians were telling. They talked about growing up. I completely related to the video on respect. That is something that I have commented on so many times in the school system. When I was growing up, we didn't think of disrespecting an adult. We knew that when an adult told us to do something or not to do something, that was the end of the discussion. I expected it to be the same thing when I began teaching. Imagine my surprise as I was pulled into arguments with second and third graders who thought the rules weren't fair! When I was growing up, we didn't tell an adult that something wasn't fair if we wanted to live past our next birthday! We might have thought it, but there is no way we would have voiced those thoughts if we valued our lives!
I could spend a long time watching these fantastic videos. And the best part is that my daughter could watch them with me. What a novel idea! Real family entertainment! I always love it when comedians become family friendly. I get sick and tired of the really great comedians being off color. I think this endeavor shows that these comedians do not have to be controversial and tell dirty jokes. They can keep it clean and funny! I hope that this movement takes off. I would love to see a show like this on TV within the near future.
In today's economy, I think a lot of families are remembering and perhaps even learning for the first time just how important family is. Money is something that is fleeting and cannot satisfy. And when it is gone, what do you have left? If you have worked to build relationships with each other, you have a family that will love you and take care of you through the difficult times. Thank you, AmFam!
