This Day in History July 9, 1927

Another person I used to listen to--on this date in 1927, Ed Ames was born.  And he is still alive, so he celebrates his 85th birthday today.  Who is he?  Read on.

Here he is as Mingo in his time on Daniel Boone fin 1964.  But there is so much more to him.  His real name is Urick, and his family was from the Ukraine.  He and his brothers formed a quartet called the "Ames Brothers."  He is Jewish, but his dark complexion made him look Native American.  One of the longest laughs in television history was when he demonstrated his tomahawk prowess on The Johnny Carson Show.  His baritone voice also gave him quite a singing career.

I first knew Ed Ames from his singing career.  I first heard him sing My Cup Runneth Over, and I was smitten with his voice.  I never really saw him act in anything but that silly TV show, but I guess he did have some kind of acting career.  On Broadway, he was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest and The Crucible.

If you have never heard Ed Ames sing, I think you are missing out.  Check him out here.
