This Day in History February 17, 1962



I know of this song--my choir guys loved singing it.  And on this date in 1962, it went to #1 and stayed there for 3 weeks.  Gene Chandler was the singer, and if you are interested, you can find more information concerning him at the following links:

This became his signature song and role.  In fact, it says that he appeared way too often in the garb of the Duke of Earl.  I have to admit I am somewhat amazed that this was a number one song, but considering what  goes to number one now, I guess it isn't too surprising.
