Book Description

Publication Date: June 14, 2012
9/11: The Day That Defined a Generation Where were you on 9/11? That question has become part of the fabric of our lives as Americans. On that bright, sunny day, none of us had any idea what was in store and how it would change our lives. Depending on what part of the country you lived in, you may not have known anything was going on until several hours after the first plane struck. You may not have heard the news until you got to work, turned on your car radio, or received a call from a loved one asking if you had seen or heard the news. Ashes Ashes the Twins Fall Down is a look at the events of 9/11 from personal and informational perspectives. Author, Pauline Hawkins, who lived in Texas at the time of the attacks, shares her experience of 9/11, and its repercussions for her family, her job, and how she viewed the world. Pauline's story of coping with the news, reframing how she thought about America and the world, and making a conscious decision to become better-informed will resonate with anyone who lived through 9/11. In addition to her personal testimony, Pauline provides a thought-provoking context for the events of 9/11, including political background, social commentary, and reflections on the contributions of everyday heroes. You'll come away from this book both enlightened and comforted by Pauline's honesty and common sense, as well as her heartfelt appreciation of those who sacrificed for our country, and those who continue to work toward healing and rebuilding.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When I sat down to actually write this book, my expectation was simply to put a few words on paper to work through my own grieving process for 9/11. However, I soon found out that the more I said, the more I had to say. Once I started writing, it was as though the emotional floodgates opened, and all the memories came back -- memories that beckoned to be put on paper. I soon realized that while everyone talked about what happened in New York, at the Pentagon, and in the field in Pennsylvania, very little had been said about how that day affected those of us outside of those areas. An entire country, and world, were affected that day. Lives were changed, security lost, and our story should be shared as well. My hope is that you will find this book not only enjoyable but also informative and thought-provoking. I truly have enjoyed sitting down and sharing on these pages my experiences associated with 9/11 and the days and years following.

The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.
The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations.
The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.

About 911

The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11September 11th or9/11)[nb 1] were a series of four suicide attacks that were committed in the United States on September 11, 2001, coordinated to strike the areas of New York Cityand Washington, D.C. On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamistmilitant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentionally piloted two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours. The hijackers also intentionally crashedAmerican Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and intended to pilot the fourth hijacked jet, United Airlines Flight 93, into the United States Capitol Building[2] in Washington, D.C.; however, the plane crashed into a field nearShanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers attempted to take control of the jet from the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks including the 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes, none of whom survived.
Suspicion quickly fell on al-Qaeda, and in 2004, the group's leader Osama bin Laden, who had initially denied involvement, claimed responsibility for the attacks.[1] Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence ofU.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives for the attacks. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror andinvading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, which had harbored al-Qaeda. Many countries strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. In May 2011, after years at large, bin Laden was found and killed.
The destruction of the Twin Towers caused serious damage to the economy ofLower Manhattan and had a significant impact on global markets. Cleanup of theWorld Trade Center site was completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was repaired within a year. Numerous memorials were constructed, including theNational September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, the Pentagon Memorial, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania. After a lengthy delay, the 1,776-foot-tall (541 m) One World Trade Center is expected to be completed at ground zero in New York by 2013.[3]

Ashes Ashes The Twins Fall Down: Twin Towers 9/11Ashes Ashes The Twins Fall Down: Twin Towers 9/11 by Pauline L. Hawkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I saw this book available, I just knew I had to read it.  9/11 is one of those things that resonates with most of us Americans, and this book is a simple-to-read book about a time that changed America forever.  I think everything in today's America is judged pre-9/11 and post-9/11.  And the author (who is a wonderful person!)is right in saying that everyone wants to talk about where they were on 9/11.  The very words or images come to mind in an instant whenever 9/11 is spoken.

I appreciated her personal 9/11 story.  She was in Plano, Texas (and I was just down the road in Fort Worth), and her aim through the story was to show how 9/11 affected those of us not in New York or who did not lose anyone.  It affected all of us.

I will be honest that a couple of the sections at the end did not grab my attention as much, but I am glad she included them.  It is 9/11/12 as I write this, and I was not interested in the economy or the Patriot Act.  However, that does not mean I won't go back to them at some point.  I loved the fact that she wrote the chapters in a way that everyone can understand, and she was very open about her lack of knowledge of the world around us.

As I read the story of 9/11, I discovered details that I had either forgotten or not heard.  I haven't always followed everything in 9/11 merely because my ex did not agree with the U.S. response, and I had a little one that kept me from always keeping up on everything.  This book is an ideal reference, and you can finish it easily in one evening.

Maybe there are other books out there that discuss 9/11 in simple, unadulterated, layman terms, but I don't know of them.  This is a book that is genuine and informative, and I recommend it to all Americans.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  All opinions are 100 percent mine, and I was not financially compensated.
