Nobody Has to KnowNobody Has to Know by Frank Nappi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Well, this is a new one for me.  I had planned until the last page to give this a five star rating, but something happened on the last page that knocked the book down to a four star rating.  Without giving out any spoilers, let's get the negative out of the way right now.  Yes, there is a lot of profanity in the book that I could have done without.  It is definitely "hard core" profanity, but this did not affect the rating of the book.  There are sexual encounters in the book, but this did not mark the novel down either.  When it comes to mysteries and/or thrillers, I don't expect a happy ending, but I expect all criminals to pay for their deeds.  I was left feeling very much like darkness won in the end.  Honestly, if only the book had ended with more closure, I would have felt better.  Yes, I am sure it was realistic, but I just cannot condone a crime that goes unpunished.

Now to the positives.  This book struck a chord from the beginning.  I'm a teacher, so since much of the action takes place in a high school, I was quite intrigued.  Writing about a love story between a teacher and a student--an instant story that kept my attention.  Add in spine-tingling suspense and a web of lies that has no end.  This book shows exactly how once you begin deception, the person has to lie again and again to cover his/her tracks.  I appreciated this greatly.

The writing style is fantastic! I read the book in one evening, and I almost couldn't put it down.  The characters were amazing, and the plot twists kept me wondering what would happen next.  Indeed, this book is intricate in design, and I only wish I could recommend it more highly.  And it only would have taken one more paragraph to bring a conclusion to it, but I'll get off my soapbox.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

  1. Ruth, so glad you enjoyed it!

P.S. For early December, Frank is donating all of the proceeds from the sale of 'Nobody Has to Know' to support recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy. His own community where he teaches high school English, Oceanside, was devastated by the storm.
